Ann Evans Tovey was born December 25, 1837 at Mertyr
Tidlillie, a distinguished town in Glamorganshire, South
Wales. Ann's mother died when she was small. Some time before Ann
passed her teens she moved eight or ten
miles east of Mertyr, to a settlement known as
Briery Hills, near which an uncle and aunt lived. They were Mr. And Mrs. Benjamin
Evans, who lived in a district named Victoria
named after the Queen of England. Here she found a job working for Mr. and Mrs.
Thomas in a mercantile store. Like her uncle and aunt, she became a devoted
member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Here also she met
her future husband Daniel Tovey. Daniel Tovey was born March 17, 1838 at Llyn
Ddel, South Wales. While
she was living on Briery Hill, Daniel Tovey lived in
New Town Pencare, (Pencare
means "end of field"), where he worked in the subterranean Coal
Fields. His father died when he was young leaving him the only child unmarried
to support his mother. He and his mother saved and came to the new world and
settled in Pennsylvania
when he was only twenty-one. After about two years, he sent to Wales for his
wife to be, Ann Evans, and his brother Francises'
wife who had recently buried her husband. Daniel Tovey
and Ann Evans were married on June 23, 1860 at Johnstown,
Pennsylvania. He remained in the east two years then
with his wife and mother emigrated to Willard,
Utah where they lived until the
spring of 1865. Daniel having learned music in the old country led the Willard
Choir for several years. They then relocated to Cherry Creek, Idaho. He was one
of the founders of Cherry Creek, Idaho in the spring of 1865. Then Daniel Tovey and a stone and rock mason named Shadrach Jones built
many stone houses in Cherry Creek, Idaho.
Daniel
held county office twice. First he was elected county treasurer in 1888 or 1890, position he held for two terms. In 1900
he was elected county commissioner. They had six children Daniel, George,
David, Margery, Morgan, and
MarvAnn. Ann Evans Tovey
died January 5, 1901. She died of an ulceration of the stomach and was buried
in the cemetery in Cherry Creek,
Idaho. Daniel Tovey
died October 15, 1911 at the home of his daughter Margery Tovey
Jones, and husband John L. Jones at St.
John, Idaho. Funeral services at the opera house, in Malad, Idaho
Tuesday starting at noon. The funeral was under the direction of the Odd
Fellows lodge. The funeral included a ritual ceremony, and short addresses were
made, by Rev. Williams, Pres. Richards, and David P. Jones. He was buried in the Cherry Creek Idaho
cemetery beside his wife.
