the day with any relief. In the evening she was in a lot of pain.

7 Thursday) Margrete was delivered today at about 1:30 in the morning through

the help of a Mr. [blank] doctor of these works. A lovely boy was born to

her. He died as he was being born. He measured 20 inches in length and his

coffin was 27 inches. Margrete had a very hard time. I did not go to work

today. I prepared to bury the child. We called his name Joseph. I was in

Bp Auckland to fetch some things which were needed. In the evening we buried the child in the cemetery of the Escomb Church. A orgrete was as good as she could be expected to be.

tracts back and one began to take it (that is, the priest of the Church of
England). I preached there at 5:00 o'clock in the lower part of the village.

Witton le Ware for Elder Horn. Two gave the tracts back and five began to recei
ve them. I preached at 5:00 o'clock in the same place as the previous Sunday and
Elder Wm Horn bore his testimony after me. A better influence for speaking
today and more people gathered. As we were returning from there some of the
people and the children began to shout [blank] at us. That causes me to believe
that something is afoot. May the Lord prosper and bless the tracts and the
sermons and the testimonies to be to the good of the people in that place is
my wish and prayer. In the evening we held a sacrament meeting at the home of
Elder Wm Horn in W. le Ware. Very good feelings among all the Saints there.
(Sister F. B. sold 5 tracts.)

18 Monday) Worked days this week. I spent the evening as follows: tonight
wrote a letter to President Ths Walliace about Hamstaley.

village. The few gathered were extremely unwise. A very bad influence there.

At about 7:00 o'clock directed a council and distributed the sacrament to the Saints at the home of Elder Wm Horn in Witton le Ware. Very good feelings among all the Saints there. Priest Gge Thompson and Sisters M. Eliott and S. Horn were put on a month's trial.

for the house. I gave number 21 of the M. Star to the editor of the Bp Auckland Harld and requested that he print the Reply of O. Pratt to the accusations
of Judge Drummond. He promised to let me know Saturday after I came back.

part of the mornings writing and reading before going to rest, 26, 27, 28, 29.

6 shillings 1 pence. I paid 8 shillings 6 pence tithing. Then I went to Bp

Auckland to fetch some things which were needed for the house. I obtained a

Post Office order for 1 pound 4 shillings 6 pence to send to President Thos

Walliace. 16 shillings 3 pence of tithing, 2 shillings for tracts, 6 shillings

3 pence for books. I walked back and forth. Mr. [blanks] Hollis, editor of

every house and they all refused except for two women. And their husbands
were out and so we failed to get a place. There was a better influence
by talking to people in their homes than by preaching outside there. In the evening we held a meeting of the Saints at the home of Elder W. Horn in Witton le Ware. Very good feelings among all the Saints there.

June 1857

le Ware for Elder W. Horn. 10 of the recipients gave the tracts back and

one began to receive them. We sold one. One woman promised to give space

to us to preach in her home next Sunday. It rained heavily in the afternoon. We got wet through our clothes to the skin. On our way back I called at the home of Elder Wm Horn in Witton le Ware and since none of the Saints had come

together because it was so wet I administered the sacrament to Brother Wm

Horn and myself. After that I returned home. Sister Jla Thompson was there.
She had come to look in on my family since the rain had kept her from coming
to the meeting. There was a very antagonistic feeling in Hamsterley today.

8  Monday) In the morning wrote and read. Worked nights this week. I spent
part of the mornings reading and writing before going to rest. On the 9th

I wrote a letter to President Ths Walliace. 10, 11.

12 Friday) A sad accident happened on the job last night. David Hainar was

struck by the steam wheel of the saw. He was very badly injured especially

on his head. I was in Witton le Ware today. I saw a letter there from old

Sister Mary Hils from Great Salt Lake Valley. Very good news about the country

in it. She has married there. Great is the talk presently

about a comet which is to appear tomorrow, and according to what is being said

it is to destroy all of Europe. Many are fearing and trambling because of it.

13 Saturday) Rested in the morning. I received as wages for my work today 3

pounds 16 shillings 6 pence. I paid 7 shillings 9 pence tithing. In the after-

noon in Bp Auckland to fetch some things which were needed for the house. I came back on the train. I went up to Jeinstawn and from there to the home of Priest George Thompson in Victoria. Elder John Thompson was living there
with his brother George. He has given up his mission and has gone to work. He has been a very good man.

today. On my way I called at Witton le Ware for Brother Wm, Horn to come with

me which he did. The people very uninterested and a very antagonistic influence in the place. In the evening directed a meeting of the Saints at the home of Elder Wm Horn in Witten le Ware.

in any way.

19 Friday) I came from work at 3:00 o'clock today and I went to Evianwood to meet

with President Ths Walliace. He preached out of doors there. We encountered

great opposition from some people there until we had to give up the meeting.

After that we held a meeting at the home of Brother [blank, Robinson. We

received good teachings there from President Ths Walliace. I arrived back home

close to 12:00 o'clock. The distance from here 4 miles.

20 Saturday) In the Welsh chapel of this place listening to the choir sing. Sang

very well there.

21 Sunday) Brother Wrn Horn and I went to Hamstarley to fetch the tracts which

were there. We got them all except for four. The people rather satisfied.

We gave the place up and shook the dust from our feet as a witness against it. We did not wash our[hands] for lack of opportunity. This was the 11th Sunday

for us to go there and testify and offer tracts to every house throughout the
place, and no one offered us a morsel of food. We left the house at about
9:00 o'clock in the morning and by the time we had gone through the whole place
and returned back to Witton le Ware it was close to 6:00 o'clock.
for the most part I have not eaten lunch on Sunday from the 29th of March.
The people were unanimous there in opposing the gospel, and I believe that they
will be without excuse at the judgment because they received a sufficient
offer of it. In the evening we held a council and sacrament meeting at the
home of Elder Wm Horn in Witton le Ware. It was determined that we should
take Beckborn and Howdean to receive an offer of the tracts instead of Hamstaley.  I have walked close to 10 miles every Sunday by going to Hiamstarley.

22  Monday) I took the children up over the Witton le Ware bridge in the morning.
And there I baptized Sister Sar___ Horn and Miriam and Jane my two daughters in

23

the Ware River and I confirmed them on the banks of the river. Sister J.

Thompson, Sister Horn's sister-in-law was present. I arrived back home some

time after one o'clock. Worked nights this week. I spent part of the mornings reading and writing. Wednesday morning I caught the Primitive Methodists

Psalms.

excellent meeting there.

he requested that I be there and all the Saints if they could come. I went to
Witton le Ware and Victoria to notify all the Saints. They felt inclined to come.

11 Saturday) Rested in the morning. I strained my back last night at work and it

24

is very painful today. I received as wages for my work today 4 pounds 15

for a while along the Oceanside. I went back to town and arrived back at the

of Thos Smith. Had lunch there. I went from there to Number 8, Rivanwarsth.
I was there with Pastor Smith and President Wallaice and three other brethren.

At 4:10 I caught the train to Bp Auckland and at took the train home.

I found my family all well, just as I left them.

14 Tuesday) Worked during the day. Rend and wrote in the evening;. My back is

much better.

15 Wednesday) Worked during the day. While I was bathing I strained my back again
to the point that I had a hard time moving. I washed it well and dressed and
spread oil on it thoroughly. It subsided a bit.

day. In the evening I went to Witton le Ware to visit the Saints there. All
feeling very fine. My back is much better.
