Mission to Wales

A.D. 1875

During conference and on the day of April 1875, I was in company with Elders W.J. Lewis of Provo City, and Thomas D. Evans of Spanish Fork City called to go on a mission to Wales.

On the evening of the               I was set apart to said mission by Elder E. Carrington.

At the time of this appointment I was a member of the 18th Quorum of Seventies- Clerk of the Mass quorum at Spanish Fork- Secretary of the East Bench Farming Co.- Superintendent of the Sunday school in Spanish Fork City- Director in the Board of the U Order-  [2] Teacher in the Quorum of Seventies- Teacher of a class in the ward- Member of the City Council of Spanish Fork- Committee on finance and Chairman of the committee on Public works, also Secretary of the Spanish Fork Cooperative Lumber Company and had charge of the account books of the Original Cooperative Society of Spanish Fork, and followed farming and other occupations.

On Sunday the 2nd of May while at Sunday School I tendered my resignation as Superintendent, but the school refused to accept of my resignation wishing that should convince me to be Superintendent and appoint some person to take charge of the school [3] during my absence.

Several of the members of the school delivered speeches on the occasion but my feelings were such that I could hardly reply, whilst some around me were shedding tears. The Secretary G.H. Brimhall read some poetry which he had himself composed on the occasion.

On Sunday the 9th of May Bishop Geo. D. Sorell having requested Brother Thomas D. Evans and myself to deliver what he termed a farewell address each, we were expected to address the meeting at 10 P.M. Other business hindered me to be punctual to the time, when I arrived [4] Elder Evans was on the stand and speaking, after whom I made a few remarks desiring an interest in the prayers of the saints and bidding them farewell.

At 12:30 the members of the Sunday S. voluntarily convened en mass at the meetinghouse, where they were formed into a procession, and under the direction of Brother William Robertson accompanied by the Choir conducted by Professor W.R. Jones escorted us to the R. R. Station, singing appropriate selections as we traveled.

After arriving at the station the conductor of the train stoped for [5] thirty minutes extra in order to give us opportunity to speak and sing. A piece of poetry by Sister Hanah Comaby was then read by her husband Brother Samuel Comaby.

After speeches and singing we parted with our friends, our wives and children amid idews good byes and showers of tears.

The number of men, women, and children that formed the escort was estimated by some passengers on the train to be about Eight hundred.

Bishop Sorell and Sister Precilla Evans accompanied us by [6] train to Salt Lake City where we arrived in the evening.

I was kindly invited by Brother William Lloyd to stay at his residence in the 15th Ward while I would be remaining in town which invitation I thankfully accepted of. Moreover Brother Lloyd presented me with a pair good books and a pair of very good blankets for the journey.

Brother James Miller Superintendent of the Sp. Fork Coop Mercantile Institution very kindly introduced me to Col. Bealy at ZCMI where I was fitted out with a good velico, Hairbrush, Pocket Knife, stationary etc. [7]

While in the city I called at the Juvenile Instructor Office and settled the account which was there existing between the office and me as Agent for Spanish Fork City.

I recommended William Robertson as a suitable person for my successor as Agent.

I had prior to leaving Spanish Fork resigned my office as Secretary of the Spanish Fork Cooperative Lumber Company to which office brother Wm. Robertson was appointed as my successor.

Elder T.D. Evans had some trouble with some of the Salt Lake merchants his creditors but the matter was settled [8] before we left the city. I dined with Bishop Sorell at the residence of his mother in law and supped at the residence of Elder Jno. Lewis in company with brother Wm. Lloyd with whom I returned to his own house, where also Brother and Sister Evans slept that night.

Prior to visiting Elder Lewis place I had responded to the call of Professor D.O. Calder at whose office I was appointed to take the over sight of the company of missionaries to Europe and others who had been set apart to labor in the U. States- to arrange for, and obtain passengers Tickets. [9]

On Wednesday May 12th we left for Ogden City per 6 o'clock A.M. train.

                                                      thence to Chicago              6.20

                                                      thence to New York          11.00

                                                                                                .70

Mr. Eddy the agent in the Chicago & North West Railway to whom we had a letter of introduction from brother Calder proved to be quite a gentleman.

Mr. Cleveland Agent for Pittsburg & Fort Wayne at Chicago we could not find being absent, we therefore were introduced [11] to a Sub-agent by the name of Mathewkaw who seemed to have but little authority.

He said the lowest figure he could take as fare from Chicago to New York would be $16.00 each. Meanwhile a Mr. Wm. H. Higgins sub agent introduced one Mr. Frank E. Snow agent Michigan Central & Great Western Railways who proffered to convey us with first class carriages from Chicago to New York at $11.00 eleven dollars each which difference in price induced us to accept the latter.

Ozias Kiborn and Ara W. Sabin stoped and Chicago and from thence [12] would wend their way to their respective fields of labor, the remaining portion of the company arriving at New York in good health and excellent spirits at 9 o'clock A.M. May 17th.

We were kindly and respectfully treated by the officials from first to last and had a very pleasant trip.

Having reached the terminus I considered that I had discharged the duty imposed upon me by Elder Calder.

Elder E. Clark having received of Elder Carrington some letters of introduction to President or Agent Stan and others was supposed by me to be the first [13] person to take the lead when we arrived at the stations in New York but through some oversight no person particularly superintended which event gave the cabmen chance to overcharge for taking us to the Belmont Hotel.

When we arrived at said house we had to pay the cabman $1.00 dollar each which everybody considered an imposition.

We were well treated while we stayed at the Belmont House, from thence we embarked on board the Iron Steamer "Wisconsin", in the afternoon of Tuesday May 18th.

After securing our berth, Elders Mangham, [14] Hopkins, Griffin, Nelson, & Goodlife, also Cain Yong Johnson &               who had arrived (the last mentioned four) by another train book cabin passages at $80.00 Eighty dollars each and the remainder book steerage berths at $21.00 twenty one dollars including bedding and dishes.

At a meeting of the missionaries I was unanimously appointed captain of the company with Elders Clark and Christiansen as assistants, Thomas D. Evans Secretary, and William J. Lewis Captain of the Guard.

We kept one person on guard at a time during the day and attended to prayers night and morning. [15]

We enjoyed our voyage well, and had fine weather from the day we embarked till Tuesday the 25th when late in the afternoon a thick fog overwhelmed us, causing great excitement and fear in some gentile passengers; so great was their fear that some exclaimed we shall be lost to which Captain Forsyth replied there is no fear. We have too many saints on board to be lost. Whilst this was taking place I was reminded of what Patriarch Z. Coltrin had said in the blessing which he pronounced on my head while at Spanish Fork City-"That I should [16] have power to rebuke the elements if necessary," and I was simple enough to ask the Lord to verify the same and in less than thirty minutes the fog disbursed to each side and aft, leaving the course before us clear which continued so during the remainder of our voyage.

We landed in Liverpool at 6:00P.M. on Saturday the 29th of May.

Here we met Elder Young who had come to meet us, and lead us to the office at 42 Islington where we were cordially received by Elder E. Hanam. [17] After remaining at 42 for a while, we were informed that Elder Young had engaged lodgings for all the missionaries – some remain at 42 some at No. 6 Staffers Street Islington and some at another house close by.

I fell to the lot of Elders E. Clark, W. Nelson, John Mellor Senior, John Robinson, W.J. Lewis, Thomas D. Evans, Peter J. Lamers and myself to up at No. 6 Stafford Street, a respectable house kept by Mrs. M. Belms where we were well treated.

On Sunday the 30th we attended meeting at the Saints were in [18] Oldham St. where Elder W.H. Mangham, Charles E. Griffin and W.J. Lewis preached in the forenoon.

In the afternoon both W.J. Lewis and myself visited Cynero Guillt at his residence in

We returned to Oldham Street in the evening when Elders M. Christiansen and myself were followed by Elder J.T. Cain.

Monday May 31.   After receiving our appointments by Elder Hanam in the absence of President Jos. F. Smith who was at the time on a tour to Scandinavia, we hastened to cash our cheques at the Bank and from thence to No. 6 Stafford Street for our [19] luggage ready for starting in train to our fields of labor. Elder T.D. Evans having taken his luggage to 42 Islington, promised to be there when Elder Lewis and myself would call on our way from Stafford Street, but to our astonishment, when we called, which was as speedily as we could get around, we could not find Elder Evans, and therefore took for granted that he must have preceeded us to the station. Elder Lewis and myself tried to find out at what or which station he had taken train but to no avail. Eventually we [20] took train at Lime Street Station, as the time had come so that we could not reach Burkenhead again in time for the next train. We had a pleasant ride and could not help admire the looks of the country as we traveled through the counties of                and               . We reached Dowlas about 6 PM, and took to the Mary St. Merthyr where we learnt of brother Edmund Hanovan who resides there that Elder Miles Williams was absent on a tour to Cardiganshire for the first time since his arrival in Wales. [21]

Tuesday June 1st.   Elder W.J. Lewis and myself visited brother John Jones No.9 North Street Pendanen where both brother and Sister Jones received us very cordilly and I felt to say God bless them. We returned to 24 Mary St. to sleep that night.

Wednesday June 2nd.   Elder T.D. Evans arrived, having heard since coming to Wales that his brother Daniel Evans was very sick at Loroedyshire he invited me to accompany him thither; when we arrived at Loroedyshire we found Daniel Evans better than we anticipated still suffering from sore eyes. We were kindly received by both [22] Mr. and Mrs. Evans.

I delivered to Sarah Jones of that place a message from her brother in law D.H. Davis of Spanish Fork City- Utah.

Elder Evans and myself were entertained by his brother in law Edmond Morgan at whose residence we stoped that night.

Thursday June 3rd.   Returned to Merthyr where Elders T.D. Evans and myself spoke in a saints meeting.

Friday June 4th [23]

Saturday June 5th.   Visited Aberdare, calling at David Hughes' brother to Morgan Hughes Spanish Fork. I was here received and treated very kindly by all the family.

During the conversation I bore to Mr., Mrs. and Miss Hughes a faithful testimony to the truth of Mormonism, which I trust will have its effect for good.

I visited brother Wm Dun and exhorted his kind wife to be baptized which I believe will be done, for she is exceedingly agreeable when the Elders visit the family. >From thence I went to Mountain Ash. There I delivered to Mrs. Hardy 1.00 one pound sterling from her brother in law Wm. Lloyd [24] of Salt Lake City, and stoped over night at the residence of my wife's aunt Mrs. Fanny Rees who had two young girls and seemed to live comfortably by keeping a china ware shop. Here I was treat very respectfully and left a photograph of my wife and self.

Sunday June 6th  I wended my towards Aberaman calling at the house of Elder Wallis Morgan the president of that branch of the church.

In the forenoon we held a counsel meeting in the longroom, and in the afternoon had a very good saints meeting, and in the evening Elder Gill preached in English and I preached in Welsh to those who had obeyed the Gospel. An excellent spirit was felt [25] throughout the day. I dined that day with brother Edwards supped with brother Gill and stoped over night in the house of Sister Price where everything appeared very neat and tasty.

Monday June 7.   After taking break with sister Price I returned to Merthyr, where that evening I preached in connection with Elders Miles Williams and Thos. D. Evans, returning from the meeting to 24 Mary St.

Tuesday June 8th.   I visited Cefen Coed y Cymmer, calling with brother and sister Thomas and also with brother Hector Rees and wife.

This same day I went to see the grave of my esteemed brother Elder Abel Evans in the cemetry and there felt like offering up a prayer for his family. [26]

Wednesday June 9th.   I took a hasty trip to Llanelly on purpose to see Thomas Roach's children in order to get them ready to emigrate to Utah at the expence of their Uncle Walter Roach. When I arrived in Llanelly I found brother John Williams in good spirit. Mr. and Mrs. Williams Bob Coliery [Colliery] entertained me kindly and told me I was welcome to stay with their son Thomas.

Thursday June 10th.   I walked to Penllwyngwyn where I found Thos. Roach son of the deceased. He then said that he would try to get ready to emigrate with the next company.

He did not know where his brother Walter was but would direct me to his John at Llwyn Hendy [Llwynhendy], and he directed me to his brother [27] in law Edward Isaac at Pontardulais. When I arrived at Pontardulais Edward Isaac received me very courteously but could not inform me of the whereabouts of the boy Walter Roach, but he had heard that he was in the workhouse at Llanelly. On enquiring I learnt that the boy had been at the workhouse, but was not there at the time being.

I then visited Mr. Bowen of Seaside or 5 Bryn Terrace on business for Mr. David Bowen Spanish Fork Utah. [28][29]

Wednesday June 16.   Arrived in Swansea in company with Elder T.D. Evans and in the evening spoke in the saints meeting at Baptist Court High Street. Evans and myself slept that night at a Temperance Hotel in Orange Street.

Thursday June 17th.   Elder Evans and I visited the Revd. Mr. R.E. Jones Baptist minister. Mr. Jones gave us a cordial reception and treated us to diner in company with himself and lady, took us to see Bethesda Chapel, of which he is the minister, and during afternoon we held a lengthy conversation on the principles of the Gospel.

I called at the residence of my brother James Martell Freehold Street Uplands, but [30] learned that he was absent on a visit to Llandilo, and was expected home by the evening train. Brother Evans and myself were at the station when my brother James Martell and my sister Margaret Martell (then Lewis) arrived but not having had the pleasure of either of them for more than twenty years I didn't recognize them, although they passed close by me. Later in the evening (having left my name at his residence when I visited the first time) I went on my way to Freehold St. when on approaching the house, I could see through the Bow window the same Gentleman and lady that passed by at the station, now sitting at the table who seeing me coming ran out to meet me at the gate [31] and great was our joy.

Having previously promised to return to meet Elder Evans at the Hotel that night I at a rather late hour made my way thither and slept with my friend Evans.

Friday June 18th.   Early after sunrise I walk from Orange Street to where my sister Eliza [Elizabeth] Gibby lived, in a neighborhood called               and to my indescribable joy, I there met not only my sister Eliza, but also my sister Mary who fell upon my neck and kissed me meanwhile my brother James and my sister Margaret arrived by train and who can tell how gratifying to me was the meeting with a beloved brother and dearly beloved three sisters from whom I had been [32] absent for twenty one years. My brother John and my sister Ann were then lacking of all the members of my father’s family who now lived, for my dear sister Hetty [Esther] had departed since I left my native land for America, and my dear sister Charlotte had slept the sleep of death in Austrelia. I there left my dear sisters Eliza & Margaret in the enjoyment of good health but my beloved sister Mary's health was very delicate.

I would they could believe and would obey the Gospel. That evening I returned by train with my beloved brother James to his residence where I was made welcome to the best in the house which indeed was very excellent. [33]

Saturday June 19th.   I accompanied my brother through the market, and thence to the Station  and from thence by train to Llanelly, Elder T.D. Evans gone before. Brother Evans and myself met Robert Evans at the residence of William Williams Bob Coliery. We did not stay long, but retired to Park Tavern where brother John Williams had engaged beds for us.

Sunday June 20th.   Brother Evans accompanied me to Bryngwyn to acertain of Thomas Roach if he would be ready to start for Utah for Steamer on the 30th inst. who replied in the affirmative. Returned to Llanelly in time for the Saints meeting, held 3 P.M. in the house of brother John Jones Forge Row. Evans and myself took tea with Dd. Ludwick. [34] After meeting we walked in company with Elder Wm. Evans & Ralf Fisher to Pembrey and there took train to kindly remain over night with brother William Evans who with his wife treated us with kindness.

Monday June 21st.   I visited Sister Rees at Pinged took tea there and thence went to Morfa to return in company with brother Fisher and Brother Wm. Evans. Elder T.D. Evans and myself preached that evening in brother Wm. Rees house and returned to Fisher place over night.

Tuesday June 22nd.   We took the train to Carmarthen arriving there in the evening. We lodged at the Temperance Hotel in Queen St. [35]

Wednesday June 23rd We made application to the Mayor D.M. Morgans for permission to preach on the steps before the Town Hall but failed- then we applied for the Market place; Mr. Daniels the renter of the Market place gave us permission but on sending out the bellman to announce the meeting we learnt from the Mayor that we could not be allowed to preach there it being as he said contrary to the ordinances governing the town.

Thursday June 24th.   Proceeded to St. Clears where we obtain permission of Mr.               to hold meeting in the Town Hall on Friday evening.

We slept at the Blue Boar. [36]

Friday June 25th.  We walked to the town of Laugharne applied for a place to preach, but in vain. Called at the house of Elizabeth lat Lewis daughter of Clorfon Mill St. Clears sister to Sarah wy Thomas Thomas Mason Salt Lake City. I tendered to her the respects of her sister, and bore testimony of the truth of the Gospel which we had to preach. Learning that in Laugharne a Grand Ball was to take place which would command the attention of the residents we returned by way of Llandowror.

We viewed over and over the place where our esteemed brother Benjamin Isaac once live at, and found that the dwelling house had been converted to a dwelling for [37] donkey, or a stable.

Evans and myself slept at               .

Saturday June 26th.   We preached nearly by the place where brother Isaac formerly lived, our congregation was not very large. From thence we returned to the Blue Boar St. Clears, calculating to preach outdoors near said place next day.

Sunday June 27th.   The weather was so very rainy that we could not hold meeting in the open air. I therefore attended the Sunday School at Town Chapel where I had the pleasure of explaining the scriptures to some of my old acquaintances and others whilst brother Evans spent the time in reading at our lodgings. Rev. Mr. Richards [38] Mr. and Mrs. Bowen and other members of the Baptist church all of whom were intimate friends of my father & mother when they lived, called at our lodgings and we accompanied them tot he meeting when Mr. Richards preached a good discourse. Evans and myself took tea at the Weaver's house.

After the evening meeting we took train to Neyland arriving at the house of brother William White at a very late hour. Brother White who had gone to bed soon got up and gave us a very cordial reception.

Monday June 28th.   The place was full of life as that day the regatta took place at Pembroke Dock. [37]

Tuesday June 29th.   We walked to Milford and preached to a large assembly in the open air near the Market place. I opened by prayer. Elder Evans then preached and I followed him.

As I was proving from the scriptures the absolute necessity of baptism in order to enter the kingdom of God, an individual said that the theif on the cross had gone to God in his kingdom of Glory without baptizm. It was then getting late, for we had talked a long while, and I therefore promised to speak on that subject the next time we would come, and that would be a week from the ensuing Sunday if alive and well.

We lodged at the Commercial Hotel that night. [38] Mr. Merriman Blacksmith father in law of Elder Evans came in to the house and invited us to come with him to his residence at Pill, but having previously bargained for a bed, we thank him, and promised to visit him another time.

Wednesday June 30th.   We traveled to Haverford West. The weather being rainy we could not preach out doors. We put up at               .

Thursday July 1st.   I preached near the academy on the Green. Brother Evans followed when one Book seller by the name of               disturbed the peace, but did not make much.

After meeting we started out of town expecting to [39] get lodgings at some house on the road to Milford. In this we were disappointed for notwithstanding we applied at a great number of places we failed to obtain lodgings and therefore had to walk about all night.

Friday July 2nd.   After the citizens had commenced to awake, and open their doors, we went in to a public house, and there slumbered a little on our chairs, and presently made our way to the house of Mr. Merriman where they received us very cordially  - the weather happening to be that day unusually cold, we omitted preaching at Milford that evening, but remain at Pill. [40]

Saturday July 3rd.   We returned to New Milford where we found brother Whites family a sereen and happy as when we left.

Sunday July 4th.   Brother W. White, his two sons, brother T.D. Evans and myself rode in brother Whites Trap to Bringest we there preached one after another near a little bridge, returned to Haverford West and there brother White introduced first Elder T.D. Evans and then T.C. Martell and in address the vast congregation- I felt inspired with the spirit to a good degree- I was led to speak plainly on the sin of fornication, and I felt that my words were making impressions. [41]

Monday July 5th.   Having the evening before returned to New Milford I there wrote a letter to Elder W.J. Lewis

I also received a letter which had been written by President Miles Williams and addressed to Saint Clears.

Tuesday July 6th.   We crossed the water to Pembroke and conversed with some relations of brother and sister Simrate of Spanish Fork. I made it my business while there to obtain all the information that I could to send to brother and sister Simrate. The same day we visited Tenby failed to obtain a place to preach, some mounted banks were performing on the sands that evening sat at brother Richards and [42] slept at the Prines Head.

Wednesday July 7th.   We gave the cryer a shilling for going out to announce that two gentlemen from Salt Lake City would be lecturing on the sands that evening, but when we arrived on the sands some slight of hand gentlemen were there ahead of us so we failed to have meeting after all. Slept that night at the Prines Head.

Thursday July 8th.   We walked to Lanndersgfout. On making known that we were Latter day Saints, some of the residents would growl and curse, and make threts that they would disturb us. Brother Evans asked me if I thought we had better attempt to preach there, I [43] thought we had in as much as we had thither for that purpose. Evans agreed to pray provided I would venture to preach.

There were but very few persons present at the commencement of the meeting, but they continued to gather till we had a pretty good congregation. After I had spoken a while, on came a stout heavy set fellow, who as he made his way towards me, extended his hand, as though he intended taking me by the throught, and using very rough language swore he would make us move: as he was thus capering I felt the spirit of God resting upon me, and unbidding by the word came "If you do not desist the Lord will strike you, when to the astonishment of those present the unruly [44] person was scared, turned pale and shivering, and in a few moments move away silently; after which we had a good meeting. We stay over night at the Royal Oak kept by Mr. Lewis, who with his lady behaved kindly to us.

Friday July 9th.   We arrived at Narberth the weather being very rainy. Called at the Eagle obtained permission to preach in an old meetinghouse. I paid the bellman for crying that a meeting would be held at 7 in the evening. We waited till after Eight and seeing that no congregation was like to be had we concluded that we had better leave, and proceed towards the station. I hastened to the Eagle for our luggage Evans promising to remain on the street till I would return [45] but to my astonishment when I in a few moments returned I could not find Evans. I enquired at every house near the station in vain- then walked to another station some four miles from there and there could not learn anything of my partner. I then returned to Narberth and enquired at the Eagle but could get no clue, it was now bedtime. Returning again to the house near the station where I first make enquiry and prevailing upon the inmate to get up and open the door I learned then that my fellow was in bed; thus causing much anxiety besides the displeasure of walking some ten miles in the rain.

Saturday July 10th.   Returned to New Milford where we found Mr. & Mrs. White [46] and family convelasent, affable and kind as ever.

Sunday July 11th.   Brother Whites Trap conveyed us to Haverford west and Herbeson. Brother White opened the meeting at Herbeson, preached a short sermon and introduced Martell and Evans. The congregation listened pretty attentively- after meeting we took in the Farmhouse by Mr. & Mrs. Thomas brother Whites relative.

From thence we went to Milford where a congregation of some 800 or 1000 people had convened to hear with regard to the thief on the cross.

It came my turn to speak and I think the subject was proven to the satisfaction of the hearers. Brother Evans followed and the people were anxious to when we would [47] visit them again.

Monday July 12th.   I wrote a letter to President Joseph F. Smith, and another to W.J. Lewis.

Tuesday July 13th.   I took train to Saint Clears leaving my friend Evans with brother White and family.

On arriving in Saint Clears I visited Rev. Mr. Richards Baptist minister- took dinner with him at Leasant. I spent the afternoon in his company at Penpark where Mr. Mrs. and the Misses Howells and some three young students accompanied us to tea.

After bearing a faithful testimony to Mrs. Howells I returned in company with Mr. Richards who on arriving home found that Mrs. Richards had been [48] put to bed expecting to be delivered of a child. I slept that night at the Corvis Inn.

Wednesday July 14th.   The weather being extremely rainy I could not expect to have a chance to preach outdoors, so I took a notion to pay a visit to Mr. Evans of Kilgynydd near Llanboidy. It continued to rain in torrents all day so that when I reached Kilgynydd I was glad to obtain shelter. Mr. Evans received me very friendly. I bore to him a faithful testimony of the truth of Mormonism which he seemed inclined to receive.

Thursday July 15th.   Mr. Evans called his men servants and his maid servants into the [49] parlor after breckfast and there called upon me to read and pray, and seeing me off gave me some money to help me on my way.

May the Lord bless that Gentleman. The same day I walked to Mydrim calling at Ornant. I put up at the Fountain Inn. Mrs. Thomas the Hostes being an old acquaintance did not charge me for board or lodging.

Friday July 16.   In looking around the little village where many years ago my father was born I found but very few of my playmates now living.

Mr. and Mrs. Havard who keep the shop invited me to take dinner with them, and while in their society Mr. Havard said that the best friend he ever met with was my father [50] whilst Mrs. H would say that my mother was her favorite so I was well entertained. I bore testimony to Mr. Havard and walk to St. Clears calling by Nantreglo to try to obtain some records of my dead friends. Mrs. Beynon made me stay for tea, but failed to find any records that I would afford me any desired information. I walked through the Salon grave yard for the same purpose took the train from St. Clears to Carmarthen. While at Mrs. H that day I talked to an old friend Thos. Davies Weaver (Twinn Lewis y Gneridd) in his 89 year. Slept that night at Temperance Hotel Carmarthen.

Saturday July 17th.   I met Mrs. Jones Ganegddn. She invited me to call at Ganegddn. [51] I made it my business to visit and talk to David Evans who once was a President of the Carmarthen branch. I found that he had lost the spirit of the Gospel, and tried to reclaim him. Traveled to Kidwelly and visited Mr. & Mrs. Thomas relations of mine, spoke to them on the principles of the Gospel and gave them a history of the Utah Country. Slept at brother Wm. Evans.

Sunday July 18.   The weather being very wet I rode to Llanelly with brother Fisher and brother Wm. Evans. Held meeting at the house of John Jones Forge Row.

Brotheren John Williams, John Jones, Fisher, and Wm. Evans treated me with some money. I slept at Mr. William Box. [52]

Monday July 19th.   I visited brother John John who was on the background touching religion. Exhorted him to renew his determination to serve God. He promised to do so, and the saints meetings. In the evening I visited Sister Mary Darknel and taught her and her son William the principles of the Gospel. Counseled William to steady his book and learn to read- he promised to do so.

I met Mr. George Davies who invited brother John William and me to his house there I took the opportunity of preaching to him- he kind of half promised that sometime he would be baptized. >From thence I returned to the residence of William Williams Box. [53]

Tuesday July 20th.   I had a long conversation with Mr. & Mrs. William on the subject of plural marriage- Resorted to the Bigin to pray the Lord for wisdom and influence to do my duty that day- visited Sister Ann Evans Oxen St. who was very glad to see and hear me. I wrote a letter to brother T.D. Evans at Whits Milford

Wednesday July 21.   I walked from Llanelly to Pontyeats called at the Square and Congress- tended D.H. Davies respects to Mrs. Job who keeps the house.- failed to obtain lodgings there.

I found Mr. Isaac Jones of the Manamara Arms and his wife and children exceedingly kind and glad to hear from [55] brother Morgan Hughes of Spanish Fork who is a brother to Mrs. Jones. I took tea with them. Finding at a late hour of the night that I could not obtain lodgings at the Square and Congress. One told me I could have peace at his house and while going thither one Thomas Thomas came in and said I could sleep in his house with one Herbert who was a lodger there.

Thursday July 22.   Mr. Thomas (Mary would not charge me for bed and breckfast. I went around the residences and informed the residents that if the weather would permit I would preach near the bridge in the afternoon.

I visited William Thomas Tailor Meinke who once had been an Elder in the [56] church but now and for some years past was out. I exhorted him to a renewal of his covenants and he promised that in a few weeks he would attend meeting and retrace his steps etc. Being no signs of the rain to clear off I gave up the idea of having a meeting outdoors and made my way to Morou where I stoped overnight with Mr. Fisher.

Thursday July 29th.   I went from Lampeter to Llanybyther. Visited brother John Evans Penywen Llanllwny, and Thos. Evans [59] shoe maker Clulffwrn, found them and their families rather dead or lifeless to the work of God- I preached to them showed them that the tales that they had heard respecting President Young and the Saints in Utah were not true. Before leaving Clulffwrn I knelt on the hearth and prayed God to bless that family with faith. I returned in the afternoon to Penywen where I met David Evans brother to Thos. Evans. This David Evans had been in the church- had lived in Utah but had left when the army was about entering the Territory- he having been to Wales and returned to the U. States for several years had again newly returned to Penywen and had brought with him slanderous reports respecting the saints which reports had some [60] influence to weaken the faith of his brother John and family. When I introduced to D.E. the subject, he hastened to leave the house and I took him.

There being no lodgings at Penywen I hasten at a late hour to Llanybydder but before I reached the place, people had retired, luckily I met a person on the road who directed me to Gurdy Bach where I prevailed upon the man of the house to get up and let me in.

D. took me to the [61] Black and introduced me to the Hostes the Hoot being from home. Having obtained permission I returned to inform John Evans Penywen and Thos. Evans Clufforn that I would preach near the Town Hall at 1/2 past 7 o'clock P.M. I then sent out the Bellman to announce the same- called by Jno. Evans to bring him with me, but finding that he would not be in time I proceeded to the place alone where I preached to as many as had come there, John Evans appeared when had delivered half of my discourse, and on my leaving for Lampeter he gave me two shillings.

Saturday July 31.   I took the train from Lampeter to Maesycrygian, walked from there to New Inn Carmarthenshire [62] I found my Aunt Mrs. Mary Charles very feeble. I slept there that evening.

I there was presented with a note from brother Gill containing ten shillings he and other brothers and sisters [75] in the Aberdare branch had voluntarily contributed to aid me on my travels. May they never miss it, but be blessed with plenty; and may the peace of God which paseth all understanding ever remain with them. This was a Jolly day in Llansaint and Kidwelly. I walked from there to [78] Ferryside hoping to be able to see Mrs. H. Williams widow of Mr. H. Williams Solicitor deceased who had something to do with my business but Mrs. Williams being sick I could not see her. I returned to Kidwelly and slept with brother W. Evans.

Thursday Aug. 26.   I walked from Kidwelly to Frimsanan to visit for the first time in my life Robert & Mary John uncle and aunt to my wife. When I arrived there Aunt Mary who is my mother in law's sister was absent, being at Llanelly market, but returned early in the afternoon who with her daughters Margaret & Fanny received me very cordially. After we had taken tea [79] Uncle Robert John returned from his work, and both Uncle and Aunt came to see me off when cousin Margaret John accompanied me to Pembrey, from Pembrey I walked to Morfa where I slept with brother A. I took a market ticket to Carmarthen, while in Carmarthen I called upon Elizabeth Jones & Mr. James who were glad to see me, also upon William Davis Weaver and David Thomas Carpenter both of whom were in the dark having indulged in sin, after which I walked to Ferryside and slept at the White Lion where I was somewhat imposed upon having to pay 3/3 for bed and breckfast.

Wednesday September 1st  I took train to Nantgaredig and walked from there to Brechfa. I arrived at Evan Morgans place [82] late in the night and quite unexpectedly.

Brother and Sister Morgans who had gone to bed, offered me their only bed, but I would not concent, and would rather rest on the settle than to deprive them of their bed. Brother Morgan sat up with me for hours to talk for we had not seen one the other since we labored together twenty one years ago. Brother and Sister Morgan rejoiced to see me, and here good news from Utah.

Thursday September 2nd  I walked from Nantheer to Pantyfer where I remained over night. The weather was exceedingly rainy. I preached the gospel to the inmates & to [83] a neighbor who happened to come in.

Friday September 3.   The house holder Mrs. Hanah Thomas desired me to write for her a letter to her son B.F. Thomas Llyn Utah Territory, which letter I posted that day at Carmarthen.

Saturday September 4th.   I wrote to Brother D. Bowen and Brother Wm. Roach Sp. Fork City Utah Territory, after which I went in search of David Thomas William Davies and William Hughes all of whom had once been members of the branch in Carmarthen but now were in transgression. [84]

Sunday September 5th.   I again made it my business to see those persons who once had been in the church and invited them to meet that evening at the residence of Wm. Hughes. As I was about to preach in Water Street I learned that Mr. Parry Robyn Dder had previously given out an announcement that he would there lecture on temperance. When the lecture was over I had conversation with Robyn, and afterwards held meeting at the appointed place to talk to the forementioned person. After opening through prayer I addressed the few present on the importance of living up to the light given us- enduring to show that person [85] who had once received testimonies of the truth of Mormonism and then suffered themselves to be into darkness were worse than if they had never known the truth, where upon William Hughes stated that he would wish to be baptized next Saturday evening- it being inconvenient until then as he would be working at Merthyr Lydbie from Monday morning till Saturday evening. After the meeting both David Thomas & Wm. Davis Weaver declared the same intention to be baptized next Saturday evening.

Monday September 6th.   I received a letter from Pres. Lewis requesting me to instruct those who would be emigrating on the 15 inst - to meet at Aberdare on the 12th so as [86] to start together from there.

I immediately wrote to Benj. Phillips Aberdulais to that effect calculating to personally visit Thos. & Walter Roach and give them the proper understanding that. That same evening I took train to Kidwelly.

Tuesday September 7.   Walked from Kidwelly to Meinke to visit Wm. Thomas, but learned he was from home. I called at the house of sister Elenor Williams Farm Gulch, but she also was from home. I walk from there to Kidwelly. As I was passing the Chapel once owned by the saints Mrs Williams who was then coming out of meetings invited me in and introduced to those who called themselves Josephites or true L.D. Saints. [87] On being thus introduced the appeared very anxious that I should come to preach in their meetinghouse where upon I took the opportunity of showing them that they were not legal members of the Church of Jesus Christ.

Wednesday September 8th.   Called at 5 Bryn Terrace and superintended the packing of an Engine to be taken by Thos. Roach to brother Dd. Bowen Spanish Fork Utah Territory. Mr. John Hughes showed me a crushing machine of his own invention and construction, which I thought was the best I ever saw. I slept that night at Mr. Williams place.

Thursday September 9th.   Early in the morning I started for Llwynhendy to see about [88] Walter Roach, his brother John had not see him for some time- the man he lodged with was not at home, nor was there anybody that could tell me where the boy was- from there I went to Bryngwyn in search of Thomas Roach. I was informed that he had been at work near Pontardulais, and since leaving off had gone to buy paint to make his sack ready for emigrating. Some time after 9 PM he returned and informed me he calculated being ready to start from Llanelly on the 13th. But not before, so instructed him to take a through ticket to Birkenhead Station, and that the Engine for Mr. Bowen would waiting him at Llanelly Station. I wrote a letter of introduction for him to Pres. Joseph F. Smith. [89] Returned to Mr. Willm. Williams to rest that same night.

Friday September 10th.   I visited Mr. Bowen Bryn Terrace. Got some of George’s Pills for brother Dd. Bowen also 12 feet of Indi Rerbler piping and inclosed the same with the engine in a stout box ready to be taken when Thomas Roach would be going.

Saturday September 11th.   Started on foot for Carmarthen calling on my at Wm. Evans Kidwelly and at Llwyn y Fillter.

When I arrived in Carmarthen Wm. Hughes had changed his mind with regard to being baptized- he would rather omit that duty for the present as he intended soon to leave Carmarthen and take his family to Merthyr, and [90] that he did not wish to be in the same branch as those persons who like him expected to be baptized, as he knew they would not try to live as would become saints etc.

Sunday September 12th.   I found Wm. Davies & Wm. Hughes & David Thomas had not kept their determinations but had given way to bad habits. I went in the afternoon self and alone, and in the openen air near the Old Church. In the evening I preached on the quay- both Dd. Thomas, W Davies, Wm. Hughes & his wife were present on the occasion.

I that same evening counselled Wm. Davies & Dd. Thomas to leave off drinking and show by their conduct that they repent of their [91] sins.

Monday September 13th.   I spent the greater part of the day writing.

Tuesday Sep. 14.   Visited Sister Elizabeth Jones and Sister James and exhorted to be faithfulness- shewing them that there was but one true church of Christ.

Wednesday September 15.   Called at Dd. Evans house but did not find him home. In the course of the day I met him in the house of Wm. Hughes. I then spoke to him of his situation which he seemed to appreciate.

Thursday September 16.   Took train to St. Clears. On arriving near the town [92] I met the same David Evans of Carmarthen who seemed a little the worst for drinking- he was going towards the station. I accosted him and accompanied him back till nearly to the station and spoke kindly to him and tried to reason him out of notion of living as he did- he thanked me, but said he did not think anything would persuade him to try to live religiously any more, and that he considered himself justified in his course- he referred to some tales that Thomas Jenkins [possibly Thomas Martell’s brother-in-law] had told him respecting the Elders in Utah. I felt very sorry to find in that spirit a man who once was a faithful Elder. I slept that night at the Blue Boar. [93]

Friday September 17th.   Walked from St. Clears to Lasfach purposely to see Wm. Isaac brother to Benjn. Isaac Spanish Fork City- Utah Territory. He and his family received me kindly but manifested an evil spirit towards his brothers Benjamin and John Isaac. I preached the Gospel to him and his wife and son, his wife and son seemed to rejoice but he said that Thomas Jenkins had ruined him many years ago by persuading him to be baptized. I slept that night with his B. Isaac.

Saturday September 18.   Before leaving I again bore a faithful testimony to them. When Benjamin came with me to Landowror [Llandowror] I proceeded [94] on foot to Feasant.

The Reverend Mr. Kichand made take tea after which he accompanied me part of the way to Mydrim. I still continued my journey till arrived in Ganegddn near Falog. It was then very late but Mr. & Mrs. Jones and sons received me very cordially.

Sunday September 19th.   After breckfast I accompanied Mr. Jones Junior and the Revd. Mr. Williams Clergyman (who also had been stoping at Ganegddn the previous night) to Ireland Parish Church, where said Mr. Jones preached. Returning with Mr. Jones to Ganegddn to diner. I with the Joneses attended meeting at the Baptist Chapel in Talog. Rev. Jno. Lloyd preaching kept Fig man meus i mi dy [95] galon. After services were over Mr. Lloyd shook hands with me, and asked “how do you do Mr. Martell”- he knew I was one of the Martells, but when learnt that I was the one who belonged to the Latter Day Saints he distained me. I told him I should like to have a chance to preach to the people where upon he said he would not give me permission to preach any where close to the meetinghouse. I then hastened outside the gate and called the attention of the congregation before they would disperse. The people listened attentively and after the meeting two of their number accompanied the Mr. Jones and myself to Ganeg Idu where I preached again. I felt that there were some that would obey the Gospel. [96]

Monday September 20.   I bore a strong testimony to Mr. & Mrs. Jones that I knew the Latter day Saints were the people of God. Mrs. Jones shewed me the various apartments in the house and the cimondings for it is the best farmhouse. I have seen in the country for style, comfort and convenience. Mr. Jones came to show me the way to go to Conwil, from whence I proceeded to Penywen Llanllwni where I stoped that night. I found brother Jno. Evans and wife in better spirit than before.

Tuesday September 21st.   I walked from Penywen to Lampeter and on my took diner with Sister Ann Williams Penganig. Brother & Sister Thomas seemed very glad to [97] see me.

Wednesday September 22nd.   I wrote a letter to brother Thos. E. Jeremy Salt Lake City- and sent a tract by boat to J. Evans Kilygnydd Esqr. My shoes appeared rather worst for wear- and sister Hanah Phillips presented me with a pair of new ones with galla percha soles worth 7- or 8/- and brother Evan Thomas alias Butcher Bach bought me a flanel shirt, and every member of the family gave me one present. In the evening I explained the scriptures to E. Davies Tailor.

Thursday September 23rd.   The weather being very rainy I stoped in the house and instructed brother Thomas family. [98]

Friday September 24th.   I walked from Lampeter to Bayn Hafod Cardiganshire to visit Elder Thos. Davies who presided over a branch at Clulffwrn. On entering Thos. Davies house I found sitting by the fire smoking his pipe, a Baptist minister by the name of Evans- he being the minister of the Chapel close by and a bachelor was lodging with Thos. Davies. At first Mrs. Davies appeared rather uncouth and manifested a bitter spirit towards the saints but on having some conversation she became docile and kindly asked me to take tea in company with Mr. Evans with whom I tried to have some conversation on religious points.

About dusk brother Thomas came in from having been [99] straitening some grain rows for a neighbor who was preparing to sell out by public auction. They having no place for a person to stop overnight brother Davies came to accompany as far as Curlnewydd to go to Clulffwn where I slept with brother Thomas Evans Shoemaker.

Saturday September 25th.   I there wrote a letter or two helped brother Evans to carry in some straw, he having had some grain thrashed that day. Feeling anxious to see the saints thriving I resorted to the fields to pray and therein felt blessed.

Sunday September 26.   The weather being very wet I was afraid that the saints who live a great distance off [100] would not be able to attend meeting, but they did attend and we had a good meeting. I felt contrained by the spirit to speak plainly that some amongst them had been entertaining an antagonistic spirit to the Presidency and doctrine of the church. At the meeting all seemed renewed, at the close of which I was presented with 3/8 which I instructed the president to keep an account of and report as tithing in favor of the donators.

I walked from there to Lampeter intending to preach there in the open air but the weather proved unfavorable. I therefore held a meeting for the family of E. Thomas in his house, where I remained that night.

Monday September 27th.   I walked from [101] Lampeter to Aberaynon through much rain. I obtained agreeable lodgings by being a relative of the Charleses for I was now amongst zealous Methodists.

Tuesday September 28th.   The weather was extremely boisterous. I attended the Methodist meeting in the evening seeing there was no chance to have a meeting for me to preach. Before retiring Mrs. Llewellyn hostes of the Star Tavern where I was staying brought the Bible for me to read and pray in the family.

During the night I dreamt that I was taking to brother David L. Davies of Spanish Fork City Utah. I thought that we met at Mydrim and that brother D.L.D. had come in search of records of his dead friends [102] and that he told me he could not stay long before returning to his family in Utah, and finally I saw him driving a horse team with a load of manure. The fore mentioned dream was dreamt on the evening of the 27th and on the night of the 28th I dreamed that I was talking to sister Ellen wife of Elias Lewis of Spanish Fork. She told me that she had been very unwell and that the Bishop had been laying hands on her and now she felt much better. But in my dream she appeared still very delicate in health. I wrote a letter in Welsh to brother D. L. Davies. The weather was quite terrific.

Wednesday September 29.   The weather still rainy. I walked [103] to Lonrhystyd where I found one sister Elizabeth Davies, formerly Richards- her husband a sailor at Llanelly. She lived with her aged father David Richards both of whom treated me kindly according to the best of their ability. There being in that village thanksgiving meetings held in the Church morning noon and evening of that day left me no chance to preach. I therefore attended church for policy in a strange place, and slept that night at the Star.

Thursday September 30th.   I walked to Aberaynon. There I applied for a place to hold meeting. The only place where I found I could be permitted to preach would cost more money than I could command. [104]

Friday October 1st.   I felt anxious to have a chance to preach and did not know how, as I could not obtain a place indoors, and the weather being rainy was unfavorable for outdoor services.

I retired to the mountain north of the City, and knelt under my umbrella (for it was raining) and there prayed God to direct me, for I did feel satisfied to leave without bearing my testimony to some in the town. The still small voice seemed to whisper to me “Send out the bell man to anounce a lecture to be delivered on the Terrace, at 7 in the evening, and peradventure the weather will prove favorable. I decended the mountain speedily and went in search of the cryer [105] and gave him a shilling telling him to thoroughly perform his duty which I witness he did. The weather still appearing unfavorable I again retired to the mountain and did not return till nearly the appointed time for meeting. When fortunately, the weather cleared, I took off my hat and turning my face towards the lofty dwellings began to speak: in a little while a very respectable congregation had convened and I felt considerable freedom in addressing them. At the close of the meeting a very respectable appearing lady made her way through the crowd and with hearty shake of the hand thanked me for my discourse remarking that she had been highly [106] gratified and inviting me to call at her residence on the Terrace before leaving the town. I felt thankful for the privilege of preaching and retired over night to the residence of Captain John Jones Saint Michaels Place.

Saturday October 2nd.   After seeing the town, I wended my way to 39 Terrace, for that was the number which the lady said was her residence, but while I was on my way thither I was accosted by a Gentleman and lady, who also thank me for the discourse which they with much pleasure had listened to on the Terrace the previous evening. We conversed on the street for about 30 minutes- during the conversation [107] the gentleman informed me that his name was Jones and the lady was his wife- that they were residents of Ludbury North Thropshire, on visit in Aberystuysh. The both seemed to be much concerned, and the Gentleman in a very guileless manner asked what had he now to do, for he fully believed that Christ was the son of God. I told him to be baptized for the remission of his sins. Both the gentleman and his lady said they would like to hear more of our doctrine, where upon I took their address and promised to write to them, feeling convinced that they will sooner or later obey the Gospel. On arriving at No. 39 on the Terrace I learned that the lady was the widdow of a Baptist Minister, her name [108] Mrs. Williams. She offered me some refreshment- said she was delight with the clear maner in which I had proven baptizm by immersion but could not comprehend the authority to administer the same, which the saints pretend to have; >From thence I walked to Lanshystyd. On arriving at said village I overtook a poor looking woman gathering some brush to keep a fire. She begged me to help her with something to buy something for her and family to live upon, on the morrow. I felt uneasy having but little money in my pocket, and having the idea of refusing help to an ind ident who appeared so very destitute. I had a shilling which I sent her to change and gave her six pence. [109]

Sunday October 3rd.   The weather appearing fine early in the morning I made application to Mr. Lewis of the Black Lion for Permission to preach on the steps of his storehouse which favor he refused stating that in so doing he would be offend the Clergyman of the Village.             I took diner with sister Elizabeth Davies, blessed a little girl by the name of                     .

Sister Davies gave 8 and I proceeded through the rain to Lanon where I calculated to have a chance to preach between services, but the weather to my displeasure continued very rainy and boisterous so that I had no possible chance.
