James Harman was born April 16, 1855, in Aberdare, Wales, the only William Harman child not born at Glyn Mil where they lived. All of William and Ann's children were involved with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' original branch/ward in Merthyr. James moved with his parents to Treorchy in 1870, to River Row, at the age of 15. On that same street lived Mary and Noah Jenkins, and their oldest daughter was Jane. James Harman and Jane Jenkins married in 1881 in Pontypridd. They soon had two sons, William and Noah, named after grandfathers Noah Jenkins and William Harman. Two infant daughters, Anne and Mary Ann, died and are buried at the Treorchy cemetery.
James and Jane immigrated to America in 1887 and settled in Scranton, Pennsylvania, living on Margaret Avenue. Their family grew with the addition of Mary, Carrie, James and Marion. James, the father, was a coal miner, bringing his skills from Wales. Sadly, in 1919, James Harman died in a collapse of a roof at the mines. His death certificate notes his age as 56, but he would have actually been 64. He is buried with his wife, Jane, at the Washburn Street Cemetery in Scranton. They have many descendants today, with most living in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
