Missionary Diary of John Thomas Evans, 1850-1852

I am John Evans and I start today the 10th day of August in the year of 1850. I went along the highway by the seaside and I am here tonight after walking fourteen miles.

Aug. 11 Am amongst the people, and I preached the Gospel of Christ to them and they became aware of its truthfulness, and I slept at High Cylanwer in Llanboidy (1) in the parish of Caerfynwyshire.

Aug. 12 I walked the streets going from house to house preaching the Gospel and I slept in a little house at Llandeilio (Llandeilo) in Penfro. (2)

Aug. 13 I went to Carmarthan about 18 miles. (3)

Aug. 14 I went to Llanelly (Llanelli) and preached there (4) after the brother, Howel Williams.

Aug. 15 I went to Nedd (Neath) castle and stayed here tonight and met the Saints. (5)

Aug. 16 Stayed at Nedd castle among the Saints.

Aug. 18 I went to Merthyr (Merthyr Tydfil) walking 22 miles and stayed here. (6)

Aug. 19 A Sunday. They asked me to preach at 11 o'clock in the Cymreig (7); met with the Saints at 2 and I preached there at 6 o'clock.

Aug. 20 I received advice from Brother John Davis (8) about going to the North, and then I asked the Lord's advice, and I went without purse. I had very little money, only about 3 shillings to start out with. I slept in the house of John Preis (Price) at Cwm Bach, Aberdare. (9)

Aug. 21 I went to Castletown about 26 miles and I stayed in the house of Johnathan Thomas and received a warm welcome from Sister Thomas.

Aug. 22 I went to Llandyfrwy (Llandovery) and found the house of Brother Benjamen Jones and received a warm welcome from him and Sister Jones. (10) I went with Brother Jones to Llansawel and I ate in Brother Jones' house at Llansawel in Carmarthanshire.

Aug. 23 We went to Llanbyder (Llanbyther) and I was at the meeting of the Saints. I had but one shirt, and I had been asking my Father for a shirt, and he opened the hearts of some of the Saints at Caermarthen and showed them the way and I asked the Lord's blessings on them.

Aug. 24 I went of my journey (11) and went inside the house of Cwyaer Mate and received bread and cheese and was very thankful for it. Then I went to Dy Drechefn (12) and asked them to give me a pennyworth of milk and received it and went on my way, and went in a house about four miles from Aberystwyth and after this went into the town and here I asked about lodgings and stayed here in Aberystwyth in Cardiganshire after walking some 30 miles. (13) I thank my Heavenly Father for his blessings toward me on this day.

Aug. 25 I went to Machynlleth in Trefaldwynshire, a journey of 18 miles, and went to the house of Brother Thomas Hughes where I was able to wash my feet and much love was shown to me. (14)

Aug. 26 I was at the meeting of the Saints and ate in the house of Thomas Hughes.

Aug. 27 I was there amongst the Saints and gave them my advice.

Aug. 28 With the Saints at their meetings at Pynel (Pennal). (15)

Aug. 29 I am still here.

Aug. 30 I stayed this day here also.

Aug. 31 Left Pynel after receiving great kindness at Machynlleth and went to Aberddyfi arriving here on Saturday. (16) Went to gyl parg (17) where I met Francis Pyugh (Pugh) and I was very happy. I stayed here.

Sep. 1 On Sunday I was at a prayer meeting and I preached at 2 o'clock at Bryn Gryg and at the Saints' meeting at 5 o'clock.

Sep. 2 I left this place, where I received great kindness, may God's blessings rest upon them, and I went to Machynlleth where I felt the Spirit of the Lord upon me.

Sep. 3 I was in the company of Brother Pyugh (Pugh) who gave me advice, also Brother William Evans, who advised me to work in this vicinity for the present. I was given a blessing by Brother Pyugh to strengthen my love of the place as I had preached at Aberdyfi, as the darkness (spiritual) was very heavy upon me, but I conquered.

Sep. 4 Someone gave me two pennies to pay for my bed but I had to retire without any food as I had no more money.

Sep. 5 I went to Kil Parg in the town of Towyn (Tywyn), Merion­wythshire, where I received food about eleven o'clock, and my Father was watching over me, and I am thankful for that and all His blessings. I went to the meeting of the Saints here. I taught them the blessings of keeping the union (brotherly), and to work faithfully, and we had a good meeting here. (18)

Sep. 6 I had to sell something for threepence which was worth fifteen pence and I received dinner from Brother Prichart (Pritchard) and stayed here. (19)

Sep. 7 I stayed here to prepare a place for the cymanfa. (20)

Sep. 8 I stayed and participated in the cymanfa, and Oh! how wonderful I felt in their midst, and I was blessed and strength­ened from Heaven, my faith in Christ being strong and strengthened.

Sep. 9 I went amongst the Saints and in their homes and we had a very good meeting and I preached to the Brother Morgan and the Broth­er Evans very effectively and asked the Lord's blessing on their work.

Sep. 10 I went with Brother Evans to Permoth.

Sep. 11 I went with Brother Evans to Harlech, and I preached here in front of Marans Fam and the Lord's blessings were pressing on our work. (21)

Sep. 12 We had the privilege of seeing three sisters being baptized by Brother Evans in the sea, and there was great rejoicing, and we had a good meeting.

Sep. 13 We went to Carnarvon (Caernarfon), William Evans, Thomas Morgan, and myself, where we preached tonight. (22)

Sep. 14 We were here in Canarfon (Caernarfon) and Brother William Evans and Brother Thomas Morgan had to bless the sister Ann Jones as she was sick, and we felt the Lord's presence strongly.

Sep. 15 I was here at a meeting of the Saints where I preached before the brother William Evans and also at the 6 o'clock meeting where I saw the Lord's abilities very clearly. I visited the sister Ann Loyd (Lloyd) to give her a blessing and the Lord listened to our lips in sight of the world.

Sep. 16 I stayed here with the Brothers Evans and Morgan.

Sep. 17 Today I went to Caerfybi (Holyhead). (23)

Sep. 18 Today I was given a pair of shoes by the Brother William Enisag and I ask the Lord to bless him.

Sep. 19 I went to Carnarfon (Caernarfon) to attend the Saints' meeting.

Sep. 20 I went to Llanfrothan (Llanfrothen) in Merionwydshire. (24)

Sep. 21 I went to Harlech.

Sap. 22 I preached in the morning at 10:30, also at 6 pm and we had a good "listening."

Sep. 23 I went to Dinas Mawddy where I preached and we had another good "listening." (25)

Sep. 24 I went to Machynlleth where I was given advice and understand­ing from Brother Evans regarding the Lord's kingdom.

Sep. 25 Went to Pinel (Pennal) with Brother Evans and stayed here.

Sep. 26 Went to Bermo (Barmouth) and stayed here. (26)

Sep. 27 Went to Llanfrothan and stayed in the house of Daniel Roberts.

Sep. 28 Stayed in Llanfrothan with Brother Roberts.

Sep. 29 I preached at Penryn and went with the Brother David Roberts the leader and stayed in the house of Brother Probar. (27)

Sep. 30 Went to Pengryn where I sold some booklets and made some enquiries about a place to preach and received a promise for a place and ask the Lord's blessings on them. (28)

___ 1 Went to Harlech to the Saints' meeting and we had a good gathering. (29)

___ 2 I stayed here and preached also.

___ 4 I went to Penryn and I preached here and was given food by Elders Robert and William Rees and I stayed in the house of Daniel Robert.

___ 6 Went to Porthmadog with Brother Rees then went to Grigeth (Criccieth) where we preached where we received a warm welcome from Captain Williams who gave us food. (30)

___ 7 We went to Garnarfon (Caernarfon) and met with the Brother William Evans.

___ 8 This day I stayed here and preached with Brother Evans.

___ 9 Today I spent awaiting the arrival of Brother Roberts and I went to the Saints' meeting.

___ 10 Went with Brother Evans and Brother Morgan to meet Brother Roberts and his family who were going to Seion (Zion), and the Lord filled my heart with joy as I had the privilege of shaking hands with Brother Thailor (Taylor) who is one of Jesus Christ's Apostles, (31) and my heart was joyful at being in his wonderful presence and I was blessed in the name of Jesus Christ. After this I was with the Brothers Philyps (Phillips) and Evans and Morgan and many other Brothers, awaiting for Brother Pugh and Saints to come from Trysil Dor and we went in about 1 o'clock and were spoken to by Brother Philyp. We then took them to Vyangol where we looked after the Saints' things through the night.

___ 11 Brother Evans, Brother Morgan and Myself went to Garnarfon.

___ 12 Sunday. I preached here with Brother Morgan and Brother Evans.

___ 13 Stayed here and attended a preaching meeting.

___ 14 Went with Brother Evans to Llanfrothan and preached with Brother Evans at Pentregareg.

___ 15 Went to Harlech where we had a meeting of the Saints.

___ 16 We stayed here and I preached here, and we had a good meeting.

___ 17 I preached with Brother Evans at Penryng (Penryn) and I had a good "listening" and I ask my Heavenly God to bless me in my efforts for Christ.

___ 18 I was at the cymanfa at Penrin (Penryn) and slept at Brother Evans and we talked about the Lord's kingdom.

___ 19 Went to Harlech where I preached at 10 o'clock in the Saints meeting, again at 3 o'clock and we had a very good meeting and we received the Lord's blessings in abundance.

___ 20 We went from Ffistinog and had a prayer meeting at Davidd (David) Roberts' house.

___ 21 We went to Gareg Pen-ar-Gyffya and preached there with Brother Roberts and we had a singing meeting at the same time.

___ 22 I went to Harlech and I went to Penryn and I had a dinner from byd (32) and I had a hearing regarding the Lord's kingdom. Well I went to the bank of the river and I received an invitation to the house of the Badwr (33) and received room to preach regarding the Gospel of Christ, and they gave me food and encouragement. May God bless them, after this I went to Harlech and I was at the meeting of the Saints and stayed here.

___ 23 I preached here and had many listeners and I ask the Lord to bless them is my prayer.

___ 24 Went to Penrigireg (Penygarreg) and preached with the Brother John Robert.

___ 25 Went to Ffystinog (Ffestiniog) with Brother Dafydd (David) Robert and stayed here. (34)

___ 26 We went to Peniery and preached there with Brother Robert and we attended a prayer meeting after which I went with the Brother Dafydd Robert to Ffestinog and stayed there.

___ 27 We stayed here and had a prayer meeting in David Robert's home and I ask the Heavenly God to bless this house, as he gives of his heart after which we went to bed.

___ 28 We went to Penryn and I received food from those of the world and may the Lord bless them, I then went to Harlech and stayed there.

___ 29 I stayed here and had a meeting of the Saints, and our Father blessed us very much.

Dec 1 I went to Ffestiniog and Dolgelle (Dolgellau) and stayed here, and made it known that I was one of the Saints and showed them many things. (35)

Dec 2 We went to ________ (36) to hold a meeting and had a very good meeting.

Dec 3 I went to show ________ (37)

Dec 4 I went to Llantymawddy in Mofyn where I preached and got a place to preach and went around the houses where I showed them the pamphlets.

Dec 5 I preached in the town house.

Dec 6 I went to Harlech and met with the Brothers here and went in the gathering and Brother Evans advised me (38) at this branch for this quarter.

Dec 8 I went to the cymanfa and it was passed that I become the presiding priest for this quarter.

Dec 9 I went to the home of Brother Lewys Maress (Lewis Morris) where I stayed.

Dec 10 I had the pleasure of seeing Brother Maress baptize his wife and I confirmed her.

Dec 11 Went to Gyl Parg where we had a prayer meeting.

Dec 12 We had a meeting of the Saints where I ordained Owen Jones a priest.

Dec 13 Went to Machynlleth where I attended the meeting.

Dec 14 Went to Penel (Pennal) to the house of Eisag (Isaac) Jones.

Dec 15 It is a Sunday, went to Cil Park where we had a meeting of the Saints with the Lord's Spirit very strong. We had a prayer meeting at 6 o'clock.

Dec 16 I went to Towyn where I sold some tracts and looked for a place to preach and had a prayer meeting at Cil Park.

Dec 17 I preached in the house of Lewis Lewis.

Dec 18 Went with Brother Lewis to B1eine. I preached there and had a good listening and sold many tracts.

Dec 19 Went to Cil Parg and had a meeting of Saints here.

Dec 20 I stayed here at Cil Parg.

Dec 21 Went to Harlech and attended the cymanfa committee.

Dec 22 Was here at the meetings and many came to listen and a good impression was made upon them.

Dec 23 Went to Bermo (Barmouth) where I received an invitation to eat and sleep. May God bless them for this, also I received a promise for a house to preach in.

Dec 24 Went to the house of Brother Lewis Lewis and went with Brother Lewis to Beine to preach and the darkness was very strong there. We received food from the smithys wife and I thank our Heavenly Father for his care over us.

Dec 25 Went with Brother Lewis to Cil Parg and we went tracting and held a prayer meeting here and we had a very good meeting and we thank our Heavenly Father for listening to the prayers of his children.

Dec 26 We went to Machenlleth (Machynlleth) and the Saints were full of the Lord's Spirit.

Dec 27 We went to Penel (Pennal) to Brother Eisag (Isaac) Jones. The Sisters were praying to our Heavenly Father on behalf of Sister Gendfir that she might have her health and I anointed her in the name of Jesus Christ and blessed her according to the wishes of my Heavenly Father and we thank Him for that.

Dec 28 We went to Cil Piarg.

Dec 29 It is Sunday and I kept a meeting here.

Dec 30 I wonder at my Heavenly Father's care for me even in unknown places yet He takes care of His children wherever they are. He opens the hearts of the Saints toward me like He does Brother and Sister John Jones who take such good care of me like their own children and I ask the Lord to bless them very much.

Dec 31 I went to Llan Egrin to seek a place to preach and selling tracts on this last day of the year and I ask the Lord's blessings on all.

Here I am in the house of Lewis Lewis on this the first day of 1851 and I am here at Cil Parg holding a meeting.

Jan 2 I went to Penel at the Saints' meeting and stayed in the house of John Evans the fabryn (39). May God bless him is my wish and that He will strengthen his testimony of the Gospel.

Jan 3 Went to Machenlleth to a committee meeting.

Jan 4 Went "to Ddynas Mawdy (Dinas Mawddwy).

Jan 5 Here it is Sunday. I went to a prayer meeting at John Roberts' house at 8 o'clock in the morning and at the Saints meeting at 10 a.m. and I preached at 4 o'clock with the Brother Edwart (Edward) Roberts and at 6 o'clock in the town house where there were many listeners.

Jan 6 Went to Foel Gell and here I rest this night.

Jan 7 Went to Feisdinog (Ffestiniog) to the house of Davidd (sic) Roberts and stayed here. They were very kind to me and I ask my Heavenly Father's blessings on them.

Jan 8 I went to Harlech to a Saints meeting and the Spirit of the Lord was very strong and thank Him for that.

Jan 9 I went to Cil Parg attending a Saints meeting and here John Jones Junior washed my feet. May our Heavenly Father bless him strongly is my wish in Christ.

Jan 10 I stayed here because I had no shoes. Eisac (Isaac) Jones had taken them to be mended.

Jan 11 I went selling books to the houses and invited people to the meetings and I sold many books, too.

Jan 12 I went to the morning meeting and at 1 o'clock and at 6 o'clock and we had very good meetings.

Jan 13 I went to Machenlleth (Machynlleth) to the meeting and I stayed here.

Jan 15 Went to Penel to the Saints' meeting and I ask the Lord to bless them abundantly. I went down south with the Brother William Richards during the last month of 1851 and I was in Merthyr (Merthyr Tidfyl) and (40) and I received (41) from William Phillips and John Davis and Brother Pugh gave me a pair of clothes also given a trousers by the Garg Toun branch, received a hat from Richard Mares (Morris) and a waistcoat from William Thomas; received a coat from the Sister Jones and handkerchiefs from Sister Mary Lluelyn (Llewelyn) and a shirt from David Jones and another shirt from the Fynon Tydfil branch and two shillings and four­pence from the Cefn branch and sixpence from Sister Phillips. Then I went to Aberdaer (Aberdare) and was given a shilling by Brother David William and went from here with Brother Pugh and Brother Davyd Roberts and Brother Pillips (Phillips) to Castle New and Brother Pugh and Roberts paid for the train for me to Abetery and I saw the Brother Henry Evans and he gave me sixpence and I stayed in the house of Brother Joseph Mathyues (Matthews) at Treboth and on Sunday morning I went to Llanelly (Llanelli) to the meeting and I stayed at Brother Evans the shopkeeper, and on Monday I was blessed by Brother Phillips, great was the strength I received from the priest. He said I would be successful and prayed that the Lord would give me the Holy Ghost and promised me the Lord would give me testimony of this early Wednesday evening (following day) and I received this testimony. I had been loaned eleven shillings by the Caerfyrddin (Carmarthan) branch last year and I had nothing to pay them back. I told them of my circumstances and Abednego Jones, chairman of the council told them of my circumstances and asked them to forgive my debt, which they did, thank the Lord for that. I went from here with Brother John Evans from Aberteifishire and I was at Aberystwyth the following Sunday at the meeting. On Monday Brother John Evans and I started to Tre'r Ddol and on Tuesday we went to Machenlleth where we stayed for two days and from here to Llaidloes (Llanidloes) and here over Sunday and Monday we went to Dinas Mawddydd (Dinas Mawddwy). Feb 10 Piter (Peter) Davis and I started, according to the advice given by Brother William Richards, to go to Llanfaircrinan (Llanfair Caerinion) and Llanfyllyn (Llanfyllin) to preach without purse or scrip and nothing of the world and thus we started on our journey and got to Langarfan and we stayed with Samyuel (Samuel) Lloyd and we had a pleasant discussion with him. Feb 11 We went to Llanfaircrinan and stayed with the priest Taylor.

Feb 12 Went about the town looking for a place to preach and Peter and I were able to stay in the house of Thomas Olyfer (Oliver) and our place was free as we had nothing to pay with.

Feb 13 We preached at the village smithys at Coed y Garllwyn and men were listening and we had food from Crysuyfer (Christopher) Hengens and after the meeting terminated we went to the town of Llanfer (Llanfair) where we had nothing to pay for a room. We went into the Goat Inn and found a place there. (44)

Feb 14 We didn't get up until 9 o'clock and the wife told us to go and work, she would not give us food or a place to stay she said. After this we went out to the country and were without food until about 4 o'clock but had some from Davidd (sic) Highin (Higham) then we went to Llanfer where we stayed in the house of Wm. Olifer (Oliver).

Feb 15 Now Sunday. We had no food until after we preached at 6 o'clock. We were then invited to the house of Evan Jones for food and we again stayed in the house of Wm. Oliver.

Feb 16 We came here to the house of Semon (Simon) Lloyd at Llangadfar where I preached to a bunch of men and were given food and a place to stay and all kindness.

Feb 17 We went to Llanfyllyan (Llanfyllin) and stayed at the Wheit Leion (White Lion) paid by Mary Jones and Peter.

Feb 18 We went amongst the houses selling books and asking for a place to preach and giving our testimonies regarding the Gospel and we received food from a widow by the name of Mary Morris in this town and we went out of the town and received food from Mary Jones "Wain Holywue" and after this we went back into the town and went inside the Wheit Leion and asked for a place to sleep and told them we had no money to pay and they gave us a place to sleep. (45) Well by the morning we told the Publican we were greatful for our place with him and he asked had we paid for our room? and we told him 'no', that we had no money and that we had explained this to them the night before and the answer he gave us was that he had to be paid. Well we had no money so I gave him my watch and he took the watch as payment.

Feb 19 We went to Main Road and we tried selling our books in the farmhouses and asking for a place to sleep. We went to Robert's Bridge and started asking for a place to stay. We asked in four different houses but were unable to find anything and in the end we went into a barn where there was hay and went into the hay to start our sleep and then a man by the name of Morres (Morris) Williams called on us to follow him and have supper with him and a bed and we did receive food and a bed and his father's name is Matheau (Matthew) Williams Dyvwesdu (46) by Robert's Bridge.

Feb 20 We went to a Wesleyian meeting where we had food and we testified. After this went to Ganllwyn where we intended to preach but the sectarian had stopped people from listening. We were without a place to sleep and we told Brother Hignines and asked him for a place to sleep but he answered that we could not sleep at his place but he gave us a shilling to find a place to sleep. We left for Llanfer and stayed at Brother Oliver's house.

Feb 21 We trailed this day in Oliver's house.

Feb 22 Now at 1 o'clock we started our meeting but were held up by the priest as he was unable to study his preaching text. We then terminated our meeting. We then received an invitation from a lady named Miss Evans who looked after the Baptist Church and we were allowed to preach at 5 o'clock. We stayed overnight at Oliver's house.

Feb 23 We left the town and went into the house of McLloyd of New Inn and had food with him and a talk. Continued travelling from the town and stayed with John Roberts.

Feb 24 Here I am at Dinas Lletnes in the house of John Roberts and I slept with Ed. Roberts. (47)

Feb 25 Here I am staying in the same place and Ed. Roberts is a witness.

Feb 26 Here I am still in the same place and Ed. Roberts is a witness.

Feb 27 We journeyed to the house of Semon (Simon) Lloyd of New Inn and I was able to wash my shirts in town and Elizabeth Lewys (Lewis) paid to have them done and this evening I preached in the Lloyd house and there were many people listening and I stayed here as Semon Lloyd is my witness.

Feb 28 We went to the house of David Parry "Tratrz ty Newydd" and we had food with him and later went to Llanfer and stayed at Wm. Olyfer's (Oliver's) house and he is a witness. (48)

Feb 29 We preached in the house of Miss Evans and received food in the Olyfer house.

March 1, 1852 I went amongst the houses here in Llanfer and preached to them and received a very good hearing and stayed at the Olyfer house as he is a witness.

Mar 2 I went amongst the homes again giving my testimony and received a good hearing. Received food from Mary Davis and returned to Wm. Olyfer's and stayed there, as he is a witness. (49)

Mar 3 Went out into the country to sell books but only sold one book and the Devil was acting funny and we did not have a bed to sleep in. Finally got sleep at Nant yn Hendre at No. 1 Plwyf yn Hendre and by morning white snow covered the mountains. (50)

Mar 4 Went to the house of David Parry of New Houses and received food there. Went amongst the houses and eventually to the house of Elesybeth Lewys (Elizabeth Lewis) and took our picture then went to Tyn-y-Bedw and received food, her name is Eleisyabeth (Elizabeth) Jones. Then went into the house of John the blacksmith and ate with him and then stayed in New Inn as Semon Lloyd is a witness. (51)

Mar 5 Went amongst the houses to sell books. Reached Llanfer and stayed in Wm. Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

Mar 6 Went amongst the houses and into the house of Davedd (sic) Jones and received food from him and later journeyed to the house of Wm. Oliver, he being a witness.

Mar 7 Was in the house of Mr. Morries (Morris) Evans and had food from him. After this journeyed to the house of Prichert (Pritchard) Evans and received comfort here after which I preached here at 1 o'clock and had food here later. I also preached at 5 o'clock and stayed at Mr. Olyfer's house, Mr. Olyfer being a witness.

Mar 8 I went to the houses and bore my testimony and received food from Miss Jones "The Gait" and went to the house of Mary Jones and received food later and then went to the house of Mary Wden (Waden) and had food here afterwhich I went to the house of Mr. Evans and I preached here. After this I went and stayed at Mr. Oliver's house, he being a witness. (52)

Mar 9 I went and sold books in the town and bearing my testimony of the Gospel and received food from Mr. Morris Evans and stayed at Mr. Oliver's, Mr. Oliver being a witness.

Mar 10 I journeyed to the house of Saman (Simon) Lloyd New Inn Llangarfan and preached here receiving food and shelter from Mr. Lloyd and he being a witness.

Mar 11 Went to Dinas Mawddwy and stayed in the house of John Roberts, he being a witness.

Mar 12 Went to Machenlleth to the house of Isaac John of Pynel (Pennal) and stayed here. I. Jones being a witness.

Mar 13 Went into Machenlleth and stayed in the house of Brother Arthyr (Arthur) Evan, he being a witness.

Mar 14 Went to the cymanfa here a Machenlleth and stayed in the house of Brother Arthyr E., Arthyr being a witness.

Mar 15 I went to work in the vicinity with Brother Richards and stayed at Brother Arthyr's place, Arthyr being a witness.

Mar 16 Went to Dinas Mawddwy and received a shilling from Brother Richards and stayed in the house of John Roberts.

Mar 17 Went to Llanfer staying with Mr. Oliver, Oliver being a witness.

Mar 18 Here amongst the houses staying at Oliver's, he being a witness.

Mar 19 Here again amongst the houses staying at Oliver's, he being a witness.

May 13 I was given breakfast by Evan Arthyr and dinner from Brother Richards and afternoon food from Sister Jann Edwards. I attended the meeting of the Saints. After this I went to Evan Arthyr's house to stay and Evan Arthyr being a witness.

May 14 I was given four pennies by the Machenlleth branch and given two pennies by Peter Davis and a penny from Brother Richards and gave all I had towards the Temple, all but a shilling. I was given breakfast by Evan Arthur also dinner, and started out of the city and received food from Edward Roberts and stayed in the house of J. Roberts, John Roberts being a witness. (61)

May 15 Received food from Edward Roberts and David Roberts and washed my shirt here and given dinner by Robert Roberts and he gave me four pennies and then I started travelling toward Llanfer and received food from Simon Lloyd of "Llangarfan" and on I went and stayed in Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

May 16 I was here and I preached at 1 o'clock in Prichert Evans' house and received two meals here and I preached again at 5 o'clock and stayed at Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

May 17 I went to sell books and received food from Miss Thomas "Belen Degae". After this I went to Trefelin Newydd at which place I was given a poor reception by the Methodists and more poor rec­eption in the surrounding country and I went back to Llanfer and I ate a penny's worth of bread and stayed in Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

May 18 Received food from Prichert and Margret Evans where I spent the day. There was a fair in the town and I went out of the house this day and stayed in the house of John Buckston, John being a witness.

May 19 I went out selling books and received breakfast from Shara Jones and food from John Thomas "Fraeth Coch" also from Miss Lloyd "A Tyfyn", also food from Miss Jones "Bedwenfwyonion" and stayed at Oliver's house, he being a witness.

May 20 Went out selling books and received food from Richard Roberts "Blaenwain" and later a place to sleep at Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

May 21 Went about the country in the northern part of the parish of Llan­fer and received food from John Jones at "Tifwell Heiam" and from Miss Davies "Pen y Garn" and I sold two books at Ddollinog but I had no bed but found a ditch where there was a little hay and it is there I slept and my Father looked after me.

May 22 Received food from William Davies and also food from Miss Jones "Bryn Glas" and slept at Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

May 23 Received breakfast from David Jones and food from Margret Evans and a loaf of bread from Pricherd Evans and slept at Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

May 24 I was in this town and received advice from Margret Evans and stayed in Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

May 25 Went down to Traellyn and came to Bull Quay and received food from Sister Griffys (Griffiths) and supper from Sister Daudy and this is where I slept, Brother John Dandly being a witness.

May 26 Was here at Bool (Bull) Quay and received breakfast from John Duadley and received dinner and afternoon food from Thomas Griffys and supper from John Dudly and stayed here, John Dudly being a witness.

May 27 Received breakfast from John Daudy and given a shilling from Georg (sic) Richards and after this I went to Trallwyn and later to Llan­fer and stayed at Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

May 28 Went out selling books and received food from Prichert Evans but I received no welcome from the people this day. They refused my testimony and the books. I went amongst the homes of the town and gave them books to read and I received about two meals of food and stayed at Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

May 29 I was in the town and received food from Shara Jones and I bought a loaf and received butter from Mary Jones to make a "smooth sinkin" and in the evening received two pennies from Prichert Evans to buy a loaf and I stayed at Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness. (62)

May 30 I was here and received soup from Margret Evans to nourish me and received dinner from Margret and Prichert Evans and after this I preached here but there were only a few to listen. After this I was­ given food by Margret and Prichert Evans and at 5 o'clock no one came to listen so I stayed at Oliver's, Oliver being a witness.

May 31 Received soup from Margret and Prichert Evans and two pennies from Prichert for breakfast and after this I went out of the town and asked for a place to preach and got a place near to Graig Wen in the parish of Llangornwyf and I preach here next Thursday night and received food from the wife of Abram Tbraid "Pen y Cae Dynw" in the Llangyvnwy parish and received food from the wife of John Jones "Beddu Guynion" and I went telling of the meeting to the houses and amongst the neighborhood and then left for Llanfer and slept at Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

June 1, 1852 I received breakfast from Shara Jones and Prichert Evans after which I went to Grof (Grove) Hill and received food from John Roberts and after this I returned to the town and I received four pennies from Prichert Evans to pay for my lodgings and I stayed at Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

Jun 2 I went along the town without food, only a piece of penny loaf and I received food from David Ellis from "Dre Gynion" and it was raining heavily and I went back to the town of Llanfer and there is a Devil's committee abroad in the town amongst them in this place. One is William Watkins, a Campbellite preacher and Daniel Rhulant (Rowland), the cooper who lives in Water Street, and Jane Evans wife of Got Inn. William Watkins says we ought to be killed as we are too dangerous to live and the other two say the same thing and today I note their full names as this is according to the advice of Brother Phillips. Jun 3 Received breakfast from Shara Jones and after this went to the house of John Shafeh of "Nanreddynog" and received food here from the daughter and after this I went to Trymeg Beddgwynion and here I preached to a large group of men and I received food from John Jones of Beddgwynion and I returned to Llanfer and stayed at Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

June 4 I went to "Henllan Ganol" and received food from the wife of Richert Tudor about 3 o'clock this afternoon and it was the first food today and after this I went to "Bryn y Pistyll" and received food from Miss Watkins and after this returned to Llanfer and I had nothing to pay for my lodgings and I thought of sitting by the fire of Prichert Evans house but about 10 o'clock a man named David Jones came asking for me to give me money for a place to sleep and brought four pence with him which I received. After this I went to stay at Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

June 5 Received breakfast from Shara Jones and dinner from Margret Evans and received three pennies from Prichert Evans to pay for lodg­ing and after this I received flakin from Mary Jones and after this I went to stay at Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

June 6 Received food from Margret and Prichert Evans, that is breakfast and dinner, and after, I went to the side of Pen Cae Dy in the parish of Llangynog and received a large crowd of men and given food by Mary Thomas. After this I returned to Llanfer and stayed at Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

Jun 7 Received breakfast from Shara Jones and went to Pen Bryn which is near Penarth Chapel and received food from Thomas Beylu and showed him the gospel truths and he was asking many things seriously. Then I re­turned to Llanfer and received food from Margret Evans and received three pennies for my lodging and went to Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

Jun 8 Received food from Saraha Jones and Miss Morgans. After this I went to Tregynon and started to preach here about 7 o'clock. They are all Methodists here and they had gathered their children to make noise but after I started to preach the children became silent. After this a man by the name of Evan Lewys (Lewis) came and told me the way they had done was by bringing a stallion and mare together. Later I learned that the man that led the stallion was a Methodist. I went back to Llanfer and after this to Oliver's house and stayed there, Oliver be­ing a witness.

Jun 9 I received breakfast from Margret Evans after which I went to Dinas Mawddwy and it was raining very hard when I got there. I received food from David Roberts also received supper here and was able to wash my feet and stayed in the house of John Roberts, John Roberts being a witness.

Jun 10 I was here a received food from the Brothers Edward and David Roberts and was at the meeting of the Saints and stayed with John Roberts in his house and Edward Roberts is a witness.

Jun 11 I was here and received food from Edward and David Roberts and preached here on the street about 8 o'clock and there were many listening very civilly and I stayed at John Roberts' house, Edward Roberts' a witness.

Jun 12 Received breakfast from the Brothers Ed. and D. Roberts and I went down to Machynlleth and received dinner from Brother William Richards after which I went to the house of Evan Arthyr and had food with him and received a penny from David Roberts from Ffestiniog and a penny from Sister Richards and slept at Evan Arthyr's, Evan Arthyr a witness.

Jun 13 I was at the Conference today and I felt that I was given strength and blessings and I ask for the Lord's blessing to be on me to do my Heavenly Father's will. This is my prayer. Amen. I received food from Eisac (Isaac) Jones "Penal" and I received six pennies from the Saints and I stay­ed in Evan Arthyr's house, and Evan Arthyr is a witness.

Jun 16 I was here and given food by John Jones and I held a Saints' meeting and I taught them the principles of praying with faith in the name of Christ and to keep his commandments and pray for their deliverance. We had a very good meeting. I stayed here and John Jones is a witness.

Jun 17 I was here and in the morning sold books and given food by John Jones and in the afternoon I went to Aberdyfi and received food from Brother Richard Hugh and here I preach­ed to a large gathering of men. Jun 22 Was given food by the Brothers Edward and David Roberts and given a shilling by Elleizabeth Lewys and I preached here to a large gathering of people. Stayed in John Roberts' house, Ed. Roberts' a witness.

Jun 23 Given food by Edward and David Roberts and was able to wash my shirt and Roberts gave me three pennies and about 1 o'clock I started for Llanfer and I turned in to the house of Seimmon (Simon) Lloyd of Nyw (New) Inn and I had food with him and then on to Llanfer and stayed at Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

Jun 24 Given dinner by Shara Jones. I was this day in this town and stayed at Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

Jun 25 I was selling books and given food by Daniel Thomas "Pen y Coed Rhw" and given bread and buttermilk by Prichert Evans and stayed in Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

Jun 26 I was in this town this day. Given food by Prichart Evans and Eleizabeth Jones cleaned my boots and the priest John Jones came to see me in this place and I was pleased to see him. Stayed at Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

Jun 27 I was in this town and I had planned to preach at 1 o'clock and at 5 o'clock but was frustrated in doing so by the rain but at 7 o'clock the priest John Jones preached to a large crowd of listeners and we sold seven pennies worth of books and given a meal of food by Prichert Evans. Stayed at Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

Jun 28 We went to Llanfer and given food in the house of John Jones "Beddgwynion" and we continued to Robert's Bridge and from there to Meifod and we got food in a house called "Tan y Graig" from one whose name is Mary Evans and about 7: 30 o'clock we started the meet­ing and there came about forty or more to listen but I thought there is not one of them honest of heart as I was without a place to sleep and no money to pay for a place. Our testimony was not received enthusiastically. I asked around for a place to sleep and about the seventh place I asked I was given a place in the hay. The name of the house is "Pentre Gof" in Meifod parish and the man's name was Jones. (64)

I then went amongst the homes to sell books and came to Pool Quay and given food by Sister Griffis and after this went to the house of John Dawdly and given food there and about 8 o'clock the Brother John Jones preached in very good style. Jun 30 Received food here from John Dudley and in a while I went to Llanfylin (sic) and here I preached about 8 o'clock to a large crowd of men and there were many of the men who were list­ening very well. I stayed at the Bala Inn and Thomas Huges (Hughes) is a witness.

Jul 1 I went to Llanfer and on the way received food from the village smithy close to this town and about 8 o'clock we start­ed our meeting in this town and many people came to listen. Stayed at the "Coach and Horses" (inn) and Mary Jones is a witness.

Jul 2 Came close to Penryn in Llangynog parish and I preached here and after this I went into the town and stayed in Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

Jul 3 I went to sell books but sold none. Stayed at Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

Jul 4 Went to "Gofel Hill" close to Mynyd y Faunog and here I received food from John Roberts and I preached about 5 o'clock but not many were listening and in a while I went to Llanfer. Jul 5 I went to Llanidloes and received food at "Fyn Coed" in Llanllygan parish and it was about 11 o'clock and it was very hot. I preached here at 8 o'clock.. Given food here and also water to wash our feet and William Evans is a witness..

We promised to be here on next Sunday and then we went to ask for a place to sleep but could not find a place until we came to "Felin Llan Wain Lanog" and here we got a place after a lot of persuasion and the place we got was a loft with no hay in it but there was here an old mattress but the wife of this place was determined to send us away but after much pleading we were allowed to stay and here we rested and later slept.

On the morning of the 16th we went to the house to ask for water to wash our faces but the door was closed against us. Then we went ahead and received breakfast from the wife of the innkeeper close to Dolinog. We also received food from Thomas Lewys "Raes Llan Hengel" and we went ahead into Llan Hengel to sell books but we had no bed but given permission to sleep in the hay stack and here we stayed but it was storming: thunder and lightning very heavy.

Jul 17 We left about 9 o'clock. Given food by Evans of "Fin y Maes" of Llan y Hengel parish. We went back to Llan­fer and stayed at Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

Jul 18 We went to the house of Sara Jones and here received breakfast from Prichert Evans and then on to Robert's Bridge to preach but there weren't many here asking to know the Gospel and we did not receive food from any of them but we did receive food from John Jones of "Beddigwynion" and then we returned to Llanfer and about 7 o'clock we preached and many were here listening. Given Supper by Prichert and Margret Evans. Stayed at Oliver's house, Oliver being a witness.

Jul 19 We went to Llanfyllin and I preached here about 8 o'clock and there were many listening and we slept at the Bala Inn Thomas Hughes, he being a witness.

Jul 20 Went to Llanswydn to sell books. Met David Ellis "Ffywnon Newydd" in the parish of Llan Hengel. We received food from the wife of David Parry "Tin y Maes" in the same parish. We went forward to Llan Cwlyn and preached here at 8 o'clock and there was a very good listening. We stayed at Ellis Ellis' house and were given plenty to eat here and Ell. Ellis is a witness.

Jul 21 We were given breakfast by Ellis of the upper house we then travelled ahead to the city and were given food by the Brothers Ed. and Dd. Roberts. Attended the meeting of the Saints here and we had a very good meeting and we stayed in John Roberts' house, he being a witness.

Ju1 22 We travelled to Machynlleth and we received food from the Brother William Richards and we had a good meeting of the Saints. I was given supper by Evan Arthyr and I slept here, Evan Arthur being a witness.

Jul 23 Received breakfast from Elleizabeth Griffis and dinner from Evan Arthur. Went into the city and received food from the Brothers Ed. and David Roberts and stayed in the house of John Roberts, he being a witness.

Jul 24 Received food in the morning and dinner and then we travelled to Llangadfan and stayed in the house of Sseimon (Simon) Lloyd "New Inn", he being a witness.

Jul 25 Given breakfast at a farm house close to Llan Offis and at 11 o'clock I preached here. There weren't many listening and we received no food there so we went to Llan Erfyl and at 2 o'clock we went to the Wesleyan chapel and at 4 o'clock I preached here and the Wesleyans came to listen and we were given food by David Ellis after which we went to Llan Offis where I preached at 7:30 o'clock and there were many who listened. We stayed at Seimon Lloyd's, he being a witness.

Jul 26 We came to Lanfaer and were given breakfast in a house called "Doleau" from David Jones' wife and it was about 2 o'clock and after entering Llanfer we received food from Prichart and Sara Jones, also from Margret Evans and we stayed in the house of Pest. Evans, and she is a witness.

Jul 27 We had breakfast in the house of Shara Jones by Prichard Evans and in a while we went to "Beddigwynion" and had food from Miss Jones and then we went to sell books and were given a place to sleep from the wife of Evan Jones "Fron Fedw". Also received supper here and she is a witness.

Jul 28 Had breakfast here with her then we went to sell books into the country and received no food from anyone. We went to Llanfyllin about 5:30 o'clock and started my meeting about 8 o'clock and many came. After I finished they fell out with one another and fought one with another over the Saints. I was unable to find a place to sleep but had to find a place in the hay out in the fields and here I slept and my Heavenly Father watched after me in a wonderful way.

Jul 29 Went into the country to sell books and received food from a house by the name of "Talog" in the parish of Llanriadr. The man's name was Thomas Marris (Morris) and I went amongst the houses and was given food by Miss Pugh "Tan y Ffordd" in the parish of Llanriadr and then we went forward to Pen y Bont and I have sold a few of them. After this came Llanwryn and I received food from Robert Roberts who is a kind man and at 8 o'clock I preached here and many came to listen. Was given a place to sleep at "Panis Castle Arms" from one whose name is Hannah Ellis.

Jul 31 Received breakfast from her and a place to sleep for nothing. I went forward into the country to sell books. Received food about 4 o'clock but no more this day. Went to Llan Hengel and stayed in a public house and received food in a house named "Ty Hwnt yr Fynwent" and the man's name was Evan Jones and at 11 o'clock I went to the Eliusi and after they came out I started my meeting and by this time came the priest Pugh who is the priest in this place. He was going to stop me from preaching in this place and if I didn't leave at his say so he would cause a constable to carry me away. I then told him that God had sent me there and that if he wanted to stop me I would go and I told the people who wanted to hear the Gospel that I would preach on the main road and so it was. The men came with me and we went to Dolanog by 6 o'clock and had food given to me by a man by the name of Thomas Jones "Y Cottage" and at 8 o'clock I started my meeting and there were many who were listening and after the meeting finished I had no place to sleep but I was given a place by Thomas James "Y Cottage" to sit by his fire and later was given food by him and he is a witness. Aug 2 Received breakfast from him then I went toward Llanfer and was given potatoes by John Pugh's wife who lives close to the town of Llanfer and then I went to the house of Dafyd Jones to boil them and was given buttermilk to drink by Margret Evans. Stayed in Oliver's house, he being a witness.

Aug 3 Received breakfast from David Jones and after this I went to Llanodwyn and was given food by Edward Thomas "Llwin Llanhengel" and then went forward and within half a mile of Llanowdyn I found a shilling on the road and after arriving here I bought food and about 7: 30 o'clock started our meeting and many came to listen and after the meeting was over I received food from the shoemaker who is here and then I went to "Panis Castle Anns" where I was given a place to sleep and a breakfast from Miss Ellis.

Aug 4 Went to Ddinas Mawdy (Dinas Mawddwy) arriving about 1 o'clock and was able to see the Brother John Davis and had dinner from the Brothers Ed. and Daf (sic) Roberts and we had a meeting here and had the Lord's Spirit in abundance. Stayed in John Roberts' house, he being a witness.

Aug 5 Received breakfast from the Brothers and then I went to Machynlleth and received dinner from William W. Roberts and food from Eleizabeth Griffis and went to the meeting of the Saints and given food by Eleizabeth Griffis and I slept at Evan Arthur's house, he being a witness.

Aug 6 Given breakfast by Eleizabeth Griffis and dinner from the Brother Wm. W. Richards and Sister Richards washed my shirts then we started for Aberystwyth, that is, Wm. W. Richards and myself, and we were here at Aberystwyth about 7 o'clock and were given food by Brothers William Lewys and Thomas Jones and stayed in the house of Mary Williams and she is a witness.

Aug 7 Had breakfast here from the same Brethren and then we went toward the Conference and received food from William Jones "Rhyd y Felin" * and close to the wibran we were told we were out of place by the people but after much effort we got hold of him*. We received food here from the old Sister and we stayed here, she being a witness. (70)

Aug 8 The Conference started in this house at 10 o'clock and after starting the meeting, the Brothers Pugh and David Jones and we had food here and I stayed here this day and they are witnesses.

Aug 9 Went to Cribyn Cholas where the Conference board met at 7 o'clock and 10: 30 and we were taught well. After the meeting finished we went to Aberystwyth and I had food at "Llanrwystyd" from the Brothers Wm. W. Richards, Thomas Jones, Thomas Morris, and Alffret Clarc (Alfred Clark) and after arriving in Aberystwyth I received food from Brothers Jn. Jones and William Lewys. Stayed here at Mary Williams' house and she is a witness.

Aug 10 Went to Machynlleth and given food by Wm. W. Richards and stayed here and he is a witness.

Aug 11 I was given breakfast by Thomas Ellis and dinner by Evan Arthyr and Sister Richards washed my shirt and then Brother Wm. W. Richards and myself went to the city and attended the Saints' meeting. We received food from the Brothers Ed. and Dv. Roberts. Stayed in Jn. Roberts house, he being a witness.

Aug 12 The Brother Wm. W. Richards and myself went to Bala and I was given dinner by Brother Richards at a house close to the foot of the mountains close to "Hm Drylhio". We arrived in Bala about 6:30 o'clock and at 8 o'clock Brother Richards went by conveyance to Ffestiniog and he gave me one shilling and four pence and I stayed at the "Dyrwest". (71)

Aug 13 Went out into the town to sell books and I sold three shillings and three pence worth of books and about 2 o'clock I went to Llanfynog and arrived about 7 o'clock and I preached here and stayed at the Goat Inn in Pen y Bont.

Aug 14 Went to Llanfer and received food from Pric. Evans. Stayed at Mr. Oliver's house, he being a witness.

Aug 15 Received food from Sahara Jones and Pr. Evans and then went to Ddollinog and received food from Thomas James and about 2 o'clock I preached here and about 5 o'clock the Brother Peter Davis joined me and we stayed at the "Mill". (72)

Biographical Summary

John Thomas Evans was born 1 May 1823 in Henllan Amgoed, Carmarthan, Wales to Thomas and Mary Evans. He was baptized by David Matthews 20 Aug 1847. For the next eight years he served as a missionary in Wales.

He married Elizabeth Ann Lloyd 25 Nov 1855 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

He was the first branch president of the Hunter Branch in Salt Lake County, Utah when it was organized in August, 1880.

He served another mission from 13 Aug 1889 to 24 May 1891 to Great Britain and labored in Wales.

He died 22 June 1900 in Hunter, Salt Lake, Utah and is buried in the Salt Lake City cemetary.

1. Llanboidy: A village set in rolling pastoral countryside.

2. Llandeilo: A market town standing in rich farm land and a center for fishing. Originally of the 13th century, the church is dedicated to St. Teilo and was virtually rebuilt in 1840. Inside are two Celtic cross heads dating from the 10th or 11th century. Penfro is the Welsh word for Pembroke.

3. Carmarthen: A market and county town which forms a center for some of the best farming land in Wales. Many of the streets are narrow and steep.

Excavations have revealed that Carmarthen was a Roman settlement of some importance. It was then known as Moridunum and was the farthest west of the large Roman forts.

The great Arthurian enchanter Merlin is reputed to have been born in, or very near to, Carmarthen. At the end of Priory Street is the stump of an oak tree, much decayed and supported by iron and concrete. It is very carefully looked after by the townsfolk because Merlin is said to have made the following prophecy: "When Merlin's oak shall tumble down, Then shall fall Carmarthan town."

Above the village of Abergwili, a little to the east of Carmarthan, is Merlin's Mill. This is where tradition says the magician had his retreat from the world, and perhaps here too is the "crystal cave" in which Merlin sleeps until the day when Britain faces her darkest moment.

The Normans arrived in 1093 and built a wooden castle on a mound above the river. They also established the Augustinian Priory of St. John the Evangelist. One of Wales' most priceless treasures was written in Carmarthan. Known as the Black Book of Carmarthen, this is the oldest known manuscript in the Welsh language and is now housed in the National Museum of Wales at Aberstwyth. The castle was at one time the principal residence of the princes of South Wales and was thus the frequent object of sieges.

The most venerable of Carthen's buildings is St. Peter's Church, situated at the top of Priory Street. It dates from the 13th and 14th centuries.

During the 18th century Carmarthen was a center of the Welsh revivals which explains the large number of chapels in the town.

4. Llanelli: Became a market center for the surrounding districts in the late 16th century. The town became industrialized during the 19th century, when Alexander Raby moved into the district known as the Furnace and established the first ironworks. He was later responsible for the building of the first modern dock and the Dafen works which opened in 1847. The coal industry was also brought to Llanelli, but has since given way to steel.

5. Neath: This industrial town operates a large steel and tin-plate plant. Stretching away to the north-east of the town are wooded hill and narrow gorges which lead off the picturesque Vale of Neath. Many spectacular waterfalls rush down precipitous rock faces to fast flowing streams below.

Both the abbey and castle were founded by Richard de Granville in the early 12th century. Most of the abbey ruins date from the 14th and 17th century when additions and alterations were made. Of the castle only the 13th century main gateway, its two towers, and parts of the curtain wall remain.

6. Merthyr Tydfil: Merthyr Tydfil takes its name from St. Tydfil, daughter of the Lord of Brycheiniog who was martyred for her Christian faith by pagans in 480 A.D. Tradition states that heathen Saxons slew her and three of her brothers while the family was praying.

It was a market town of some importance in the 12th century. It later became a coal mining town and records show local iron workings here as early as the 16th century. However, it was not until the 19th century that the potential of the town's natural iron resources was realized and the community expanded. By 1831 Merthyr Tydfil had become the largest town in Wales, and four large ironworks had been set up by pioneers Josiah Guest, Richard Crawshay, and the contemporaries.

The parish Church of St. Tydfil is of 14th century origin. An iron bridge over the river Taff is believed to be the oldest in existence.

7. Cymreig: Means Welsh Meeting Place, apparently the name of a hall.

8. John Davis: Apparently a Church member of some importance in Wales. He wrote the poem entitled "Verse" that was published in the Welsh edition of the Pearl of Great Price. He also translated the Pearl of Great Price from English to Welsh, wrote a few missionary pamphlets, and lists himself as publisher of several Welsh missionary pamphlets. He may have been the president of the conference in the Merthyr Tydfil area or some other type of influential position.

9. Aberdare: The 12th century Church of St. John is one of the oldest in Glamorgan but has been considerably restored. In 1789 David Williams of nearby Aberaman insisted on being buried standing upright in the churchyard to be ready for the Day of Judgement. The town is an industrial center in a valley which still retains much of its natural beauty. Cwm Bach: The name of a house or farm. In Wales, then and today, residents attach names to their house or farm.

10. Llandovery: A very pleasant little market town with a name that means "church amidst the water". The significance of this is immediately apparent, because it is here that the rivers Bran and Gwydderig run into the Tywi. Since Roman times at least Llandovery has been recognized as a place of importance, and the church of Llanfair is built within the ramparts of a Roman fort. The fabric of the church wall includes some Roman tiles.

A ghastly monument marking the grave of William Williams can be seen in the churchyard. Williams was a local man who lived at a farm called Pantycelyn, which lies about 5 miles from Llandovery. he is most remembered by Englishmen as being the composer of the hymn, "Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah".

There are three Nonconformist churches of interest: Salem Welsh Methodist Chapel of 1836, Ebenezer Baptist Chapel of 1844, and Tabernacle Congregational Chapel of 1791.

The parish church of Llandigat dates mostly from the 14th and 15th centuries.

Somewhere in the churchyard is the grave of Rhys Pritchard, who wrote a collection of simple verses called The Welshman's Candle. This work became as popular in Wales as Pilgrim's Progress did in England.

Sparse remains of a Norman castle here date mostly from the 13th century and stand on a mound by the river south of the town. Llandovery grew up around the castle and became an important center for the assembly of cattle prior to their being driven to England.

Llandovery College is one of only two public schools in Wales. It is a building in the gothic style and was founded in 1848.

11. "Elder John T. Evans, now of Salt Lake City, spent about eight years when a young man in preaching the Gospel in his native country -- Wales. During about five years of this time he labored as a traveling Elder in North Wales, one of the very hardest of missionary fields, where he traveled and preached without purse or scrip. Much of the time he labored alone, for, although many different Elders were sent at various times by the president of the mission to assist him, they generally became discouraged on account of the persecution and hardships they were forced to endure and soon abandoned their labors." (From the "Juvenile Instructor" of 1882 entitled Early Scenes in Church History, Eighth Book of the Faith-promoting Series "Elder John T. Evans' Statement".

12. Dy Drechefn: Name of a house or farm.

13. Aberystwyth: The seat of local and some national government departments, a university center, and an important shopping focus. Although there was a prehistoric settlement at Pen Dinas, the hill at the lower end of the town, the rise of Aberystwyth dates from the year 1277. This was when Edmund Crouchback, brother or Edward I, built the castle which the Welsh destroyed five years later -- and the king rebuilt after that. Owain Glyndwr held it from 1404 to 1408. Cromwell's forces captured and destroyed it in the civil war, and today the ruins have been laid out as gardens which form a viewpoint for sitting and looking out over Cardigan Bay. Charles I established a mint here which was operated by Thomas Bushell, who minted coins from silver obtained from local mines.

Here too is the National Library of Wales which contains over 5.5 million books, manuscripts, and documents of all kinds. Among the treasures housed here are the Black Book of Carmarthen, the earliest Welsh manuscript; the Book of Taliesin; the Laws of Hywel Dda; and a manuscript copy of the Canterbury Tales.

14. Machynlleth: This town has a history going back to Roman times when it was named Maglona. It is a "T" shaped town. It once had a snuff industry. The factory dates to 1775. At one time the town had no fewer than 17 printing houses. In the 19th century the town had 24 inns, two of which still remain: The White Lion and the Wynnstay.

15. Pennal: Set in fine scenery, this little village mainly comprises low, slate-built cottages grouped around St. Peter's Church.

To the south of the village are traces of Cefn Gaer Roman fort.

16. Aberdyfi: A resort town with a pleasant Edwardian/Victorian feel about it. Being well off the beaten track, it has managed to retain its personality better than most places.

The resort has good sands, but its original business was not tourism -- rather with seafaring and shipbuilding. At one time it had several shipyards. The town was listed as one of the most important ports along the Welsh coast.

17. Gyl parg: The words are unintelligible, however "parg" may be the word "parq" or park.

18. Tywyn: This town's name was originally spelled Towyn but was often confused by a northern Welsh town of the same spelling.

Tywyn's foundation's lie in the 6th century when St. Cadfan of Brittany established a church here on his way to Bardsey Island. The present church of St. Cadfan is of 12th century foundation and still retains the Norman nave, aisles, clerestory, and north transcript. Inside are two effigies, one of a priest with his amice or hood covering his head, and the other of a knight. St. Cadfan's stone is a 7 ft. relic of the 7th century. Preserved at the church it bears the earliest Welsh inscription extant.

19. The translator noted that he is not sure of the translation of this sentence because of poor writing.

20. Cymanfa: literally means "assembly" but connotes a gathering of souls, usually to sing hymns of praise to the Lord, similar to a revival.

21. Harlech: Granite-built houses and narrow streets clinging to a steep hill which descends to the coastal plain below characterize this town.

The parish church of St. Tanwg was built in the 1840's.

Dominating the town from a craggy hilltop are the ruins of the 13th century castle. It was built on the site of a Celtic fortress known as Twr Branwen. The castle was erected between 1283 and 1290.

22. Caernarfon: Site of the most visited castle in Wales. There was a settlement on Twthill, east of the present town, long before the Romans established themselves as military overlords of this region. The Roman fort was the farthest west outpost of the Roman Empire. The fort was built between 70-80 A.D., and was built of earth and timber. In about 150 A.D. it was rebuilt in stone.

The castle was built in 1283 by Edward I, and its chief function was to suppress the Welsh. The castle suffered from neglect until 1660 when it was ordered demolished. These orders were not carried out. Modern repair of the castle was begun in the last century.

23. Called Caerfybi in Welsh and Holyhead in English, this town is Britain's largest passenger port. It is located on Holy Island. Its future as a port was assured in 1845 with the building of the railway.

A reminder that Holyhead's importance dates back to Roman times is provided by Caer Cybi, a coastal fort just off the town's High Street. The high walls are 6 ft thick and enclose the parish church of St. Cybi. The fort dates back to the 3rd or 4th century and was probably an outpost of the fort at Caernarfon. The church here was established in the 5th century.

24. Llanfrothen: The home of the famous British prime minister, David Lloyd George.

25. Dinas Mawddwy: Pronounced "Deenas Mouthwe", this village once had a dark reputation as center for a band of outlaws. During the 16th century the area was terrorized by the Gwylliad Cochian (red-haired brigands). The Red Robbers were a type of Welsh Mafia dealing mainly in sheep and cattle thefts, but were not above murder either. As late as the last century, instruments such as upturned scythes were found in house chimneys, placed there to deter the outlaws from disturbing the sleeping households.

Lead mining and slate quarrying were once considerable employers of local labor, but is no more.

Because the village is isolated, it has preserved its "Welshness" better than most places.

26. Barmouth: Called Abermo or Bermo in Welsh. Many of the ships used along the Welsh coast were built in this town before the coming of the railway.

27. Penryn: An abbreviation of the full name of the town "Penrhyndreudraeth". It is a large quarrying village in a stark setting.

This Pearl of Great Price was not the book we are familiar with today. It was a pamphlet 76 pages long compiled by Franklin D. Richards, president of the British Mission, and was used as a missionary tract. It was a compilation of scriptures revealed to Joseph Smith that were especially liked by Brother Richards. A poem entitled "Verse" by John Davis

The title of this tract was later used for the compilation of scriptures that we know today, which was accepted as scripture in General Conference in 1880.

29. The diary doesn't say what month the following dates belong to. The month is either October or November.

30. Criccieth: A town that slopes steeply to the sea. The site of the castle has probably had some kind of fortification on it since pre-­Roman times. The present castle was built in 1230.

31. This is John Taylor who later became the third prophet of this dispensation.

32. Byd: the Welsh word meaning "world", apparently meaning someone not a member of the Church.

33. Badwr: Abbreviation of Bedyddiwr which means "Baptist".

34. Ffestiniog: The local church is dedicated to St. Twrog, a 7th century saint.

There are some very fine waterfalls in the area, and the village is a center for mountain walks. In a stream by the near­by Cynfal Falls stands an isolated rock known as Hugh Lloyd's Pulpit. Lloyd was a 17th century oracle who was reputed to be a magician. Legend has it that he delivered incantations at mid­night from the top of this rock.

35. Dolgellau: During the 18th century this town was a center of the flannel trade. Weaving was a home industry and many of the farms and cottages had their own looms. Gold is found in the nearby mountains.

42. Saints' Meeting: Testimony or sacrament meetings.

Cefn: Short form of the town's complete name Cefn-Coed-Y-­Cymmer. This is the site of one of the most important early ironworks in the Merthyr Tydfil area. They were rounded (founded?) in 1766.

Llanidloes: A town with tree-lined streets. A new church in the town is dedicated to the town's own martyr, St. Richard Gwyn who was burned at the stake in 1548 for refusing to recognize the Reformation.

43. Llanfair Caereinion: From this point on, Elder Evans always refers to this town as Llanfair. It is a quiet gray town built on a hillside above a river.

Llanfyllin: A lonely little town on the river Cain.

"A rather curious circumstance occurred while Elder Evans was laboring in North Wales in company with Peter Davis. They were traveling as usual without purse or scrip and had been two days without food, when they entered a village and applied at a store kept by a man named Jones to try to sell a few tracts with which to procure some food.

"On learning what kind of tracts they were, the store­keeper refused to purchase, and they tramped on. The next place they entered was a shoemaker's shop, where they asked the privilege of warming themselves by the fire, for they were almost frozen, it being extremely cold weather and the month of February. Some of the shoemakers became interested in their conversation and one of them offered to try and find a place for them to stay over night. He returned, however, after a while to say that the Methodist preacher of that circuit was to occupy the spare bed which he expected to procure for them. He, therefore, recommended them to proceed some distance farth­er till they came to a farmhouse, to which he directed them, where he had no doubt they could get lodgings and food.

"The Elders trudged along, but when they arrived at the farmhouse it was evident that the family had retired for the night, for there was no light to be seen. They noticed a barn, however, standing convenient to the roadside, which seemed to offer shelter for them at least, and they entered it and burrowed into a heap of straw they found there. They lay in that position for some time, shivering with the cold and trying in vain to go to sleep, when suddenly they heard some­one outside call out, "Hello, you men, come out here!". Their first thought was that someone had detected them while in the act of seeking shelter in the barn and informed the police, who were about to arrest them as vagrants. They, therefore, remained as quiet as possible until the call had been repeated several times, when they concluded they might as well answer, whatever might be the consequences. As soon as they inquired what was wanted, the person informed them that he would find a place for them to stay if they would come out. Thinking same treachery might be meant, they declined with thanks and told him they could get along where they were. He, however, urged them to go with him, saying he would take them to a place where they could have a good supper and a comfortable bed to sleep in. They accord­ingly came out and accompanied the stranger, whom they had never seen before, back to the village and to the very store where they had tried to sell the tracts. There they found a warm welcome, a good supper and a comfortable bed. But now for the sequel:

"A young girl who happened to be in the shoe shop where they called and who overheard the conversation, afterwards had occasion to call at Jones' store, and repeated it to the proprietor's daugh­ter. The sympathy of the girls was aroused at the thoughts of the two young and strange preachers seeking lodgings and food that cold night, and when Miss Jones retired to bed she found it impossible to sleep. Her teeth rattled and she shook and chilled all over although she was in a comfortable bed and in a warm house. Nor could the fam­ily prevent her from chilling although they did all they could to warm her. In the midst of her shivering she kept bewailing the fate of the two young preachers, whom she felt sure would suffer that cold night, and finally she prevailed upon her brother to go in search of them and bring them back to their house, that they might have some supper and a comfortable bed to sleep in." (The Juvenile Instructor)

44. Hereafter Elder Evans' spelling of Llanfer for Llanfair will be used in reference to this town.

45. Wain Holywue: Name of the house or farm where Mary Jones lives. In Wales, people are also called by the name of their residence. Thus Mary J may also be know as Mary Holywue.

49. From this point on, Elder Evans always notes that someone is a witness. Apparently he must have received instruction to do so as a means of protecting himself against false accusations. The wit­ness is probably meant to testify that Elder Evans was where he said he was on any given day in case anyone should question Elder Evans on his whereabouts.

50. Nant y Hendre is a village name. No. 1 Plwys yn Hendre is the address at which he stayed.

51. Tyn-y-Bedw is a village name. New Inn is a house name.

52. The Gait: Name of a house or farm.

53. Llansantffraid ym Mechain: A long, thin village which extends for 0.5 mile. It is an important center for agricultural trade.

54. Meifod: A historic village because of its association with the princes of the ancient Welsh province/state of Powys. Some of them are buried here. The Lloyd family that founded Lloyd's Bank is also from here.

55. Fron Fach: Name of a house or farm and means 'little breast '.

56. Afron Fach: Name of a house or farm.

57. Cwm Gwyn: Name of a house or farm.

58. Caith: Name of a house or farm.

59. Henllan and Berdue Gwynion are house or farm names. This entry appears to be for May 3 and 4.

60. Dinner is the noon meal; supper is the evening meal and is served at 7 or 8 pm. Afternoon food is probably tea time at 4:00.

Brin Glaes: Name of a house or farm.

61. He contributed towards the future construction of the Salt Lake Temple.

62. Smooth sinkin: He probably broke bread in a bowl and put dabs of butter on top and poured boiling water over it, and may have sprinkled on salt and pepper. He may have also used beef broth.

63. Their names were probably recorded as a witness against them according to the Scripture: "And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, accord­ing to their works." (Rev. 20:12) "You will discover in this quotation that the books were opened; and another book was opened, which was the book of life; but the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works; consequently, the books spoken of must be the books which contained the record of their work, and refer to the records which are kept on the earth." (D&C 128:7)

"While preaching in that same region (North Wales) Elder Evans was sent for by a very wealthy and influential man named Nathaniel Rowlands, who wished him to come and preach at his house. He had once heard Elder Abel Evans preach and become somewhat interested in the doctrines he taught, and wanted to learn more of them. After preach­ing at his house he went to a village about a mile distant to fill an appointment. At this village a literary gathering or eisteddfod was being held, composed of the best educated men of the region, who were in the habit of meeting to compare their literary and musical compositions and compete for prizes. This association comprised quite a number of ministers of various denominations, and they, knowing that Elder Evans was going to preach in the village on the same evening upon which they were to hold their meeting, decided to go and oppose him publicly and expose his doctrines to the ridicule of his congregation. They therefore sent one of their number to Elder Evans' meeting to detain him until their meeting was over.

"This man came and at the close of Elder Evans' sermon he began asking him questions, and thus detained him until a late hour, and the congregation, knowing the character of the inquisitor, stayed to see the end of the controversy. Finally, eight other preachers from the eisteddfod came and announced to the Elder their intention. Elder Evans was greatly surprised to see such an array of talent unitedly opposed to him, but he did not feel to shrink from the contest, for he knew he had the truth on his side. In the out­set some of the more independent persons in the audience stated that if the fallacy of the young man's doctrines was to be exposed, he should first be allowed to state briefly what his doctrines were. The preachers assented to this and Elder Evans explained, one after another, the first principles of the gospel, in as plain a manner as possible, and they in turn sought to controvert and ridicule them. When he got to the subject of baptism, a division occurred among the preachers, some of them being Baptists and others holding baptism as non-essential. They soon got to denouncing each other as ve­hemently as they had the young Elder just before, and when they almost got to blows the audience interfered and the meeting was broken up, leaving a far more favorable feeling towards Elder Evans than had before existed." 64. Beddgynion: Name of a house or farm and means "white graves."

65. Cae Caerog: Name of a house or farm and means "field of stones".

66. The Welsh word for city is dinas. Brother Evans uses dinas in reference to any city, town, or village.

67. Mallwyd : This attractive village lies between Machynlleth and Dinas Mawddwy, and is the point in the Dyfi valley where slate buildings give way to stone.

68. Brin Glaes: Means "blue hill".

69. Ty Hwnt yr Fynwent: Means "next to the cemetary".

The word eliusi has no translation.

70. The sentence between the two asterisks does not make sense.

71. Bala: Gateway to the wilder, craggier regions of Wales.

Bala's main interest is its lake, the largest natural body of water in Wales. The lake never attains as much as one mile in width, but it is as deep as 150 feet in some places. Llyn Tegid is its more usual name.

The town used to be noted for its knitted socks.

Bala's more enduring claim to fame is as one of the leading centers for the Noncomformist movement in Wales. In the forefront of this breakaway movement from the estab­lished church in the latter half of the 18th century was Thomas Charles. His organizing ability enabled him to set up a chain of Sunday Schools, which, unlike the English Sunday Schools, were attended by adults as well as children.
