January 1852

January 2nd - meet Elder Levi Richards & wife by the train &c from Cardiff.

January 4th/52 - The Merthyr Branch held the meeting from 11 o'clock morning until 3 o'clock being the first Sunday in the month the saints paid the worth of the dinner to the fund for clearing the debt of the Books &c I paid 6 - preached in the evening in Merthyr.

Tuesday 6th 1852 - General council meeting had a very good meeting

Thursday 8th 1852 - attended Merthyr saints meeting opened the meeting through prayer and singing then all the Elders were called on the stage by the President & bore their testimonies. Confirmed sister Mary Thomas

Friday 9th-52 - distributed the Stars

Sunday 11th Conference - Elder John Taylor arrives in the evening together with Elder Haliday - had a good conference all day. Brother Taylor preached in the evening to a room full of people.

Monday 12th 1852 - Held a conference from 10 o'clock until about ½ past 2 in the afternoon and Brothers Phillips, Davis, Pugh, Haliday & Taylor spoke & taught the officers &c. Had and Eisteddfod in the evening at 6 o'clock the White Lion Room was crowded to excess were obliged to separate the meeting in two - so they published another meeting in English Branch Room But the congregation did not seem to leave the first until Elders Taylor and Phillips lead them, they returned to the first in about an hour and a half had a very interesting meeting.

Wednesday 14th - Visited Ynysgau Branch ordained Thomas Jenkins as Elder, Daniel Griffiths a Teacher and James Huxton a Teacher, also layed hands with Elders J Argust & Bywater to ordain others & to confirm some one - spoke a little concerning the temple that it is a great blessing that we are favored with an opportunity to assist erecting another temple to the name of the Lord and that it will a great blessing for us if we do our endeavors towards it &c.

Thursday Jan 15th 1852 - attended Merthyr saints meeting where the sixth General Epistle was read by Brother Reynolds. afterwards President Phillips taught a little on its contents &c. Brother John Evans then gave a little instruction to the saints afterwards Pres. Phillips rose & said that he had a mystery to unfold to the saints - that was, Brother Evans who has been laboring in North Wales wanted a waistcoat & hat, then he asked who was present that could give him a new once, so Brother William Thomas rose up & said that he had a waistcoat stuff that he would give so some one rose & said he would give his best hat, but that would not do, so I gave money to buy a new one 8 shillings

Sunday 18th/52 - Attended Merthyr meeting morning to discuss it through prayer - afterwards went with Elder Dd. Jones to Cefn saints meeting - preached in the evening after Elders Harris & Jones in Merthyr to a large congregation.

Monday 19th - Visited Cwmbach on horse back saw some of the saints well

Tuesday 20th-52 - General Council meeting

Thursday 22nd 1852 - attended the saints meeting in Merthyr when President Phillips rose up & taught at great length upon different subjects - Brother John Evans being present & wanted a coat so President Phillips asked who was present that would give him one & if there was not one that could give one, two or three might join, so sister Mason, Jones (John Jones nailor's) widow & Mary Llewellyn joined to give him one (three being widows) - ordained Thomas Evans an Elder

Friday 23=1852 - Merthyr. very busy all day writing afternoon went to the funeral of Evan Evans' child of Georgetown in company of President Phillips

Saturday 24th - very busy President Phillips left for Carmarthen conference, paid 6 pence towards paying £1 borrowed by Thomas Harris from Bro. John Davis don't know what for the collector could not give account.

Sunday 25th -52 - writing in the morning, the accounts of the PE Fund of the Welsh conferences - attended Merthyr saints meeting, President Davis present he taught the saints very interesting subjects also quoted what was in the "Frontier Guardian" concerning the word of wisdom viz, that they passed in conference in Great Salt Lake City, that all would not keep the world of wisdom should be cut out from the church - I followed him short, advising the saints to be careful, not to partake of the sacrament when they should be under a transgression & that it was the duty of all to make known their sins if they were guilty of any, so that they may have forgiveness & sooner the better to have forgiveness of all sins always that they may have the Holy Spirit found upon them, to help them on in the work of the Lord & that the Devil sometimes persuades the saints after they have transgressed not to confess for that they may commit more transgression & then have forgiveness for all &c & that was a dangerous way. Attended evening service when Elders Evans, Thomas & John Jones preached on very interesting principles to a great assembly

Monday 26th-52 - Merthyr at home very busy having received an answer from Liverpool to President Phillips letter concerning who should emigrate this time with "Ellen Maria" through the aid of the Fund, when Sam Evans Blacksmith Merthyr & family, John Price & child, David Isaac Jones & Mary his wife were selected to go, all very busy preparing to start tomorrow for Swansea ready to start with steamer for Liverpool on Wednesday.

Tuesday 27th -52 - Went on Ponny's back to Swansea to meet President Phillips & the saints that were going off to Zion called at Neath dined there about ½ past 3 o'clock, reached Swansea about 5 o'clock.

Wednesday 28th 52 - In Swansea walked about with President Phillips, Sister Phillips & some others about Swansea & watching the steamer into the Port - attended saints meeting in Trades Hall Pres Phillips present also Elder Evans & others talk a little. more particularly to the saints that were leaving for Zion - advising them to be obedient to whoever that should be president over them & particularly to be patient in all circumstances & they would prosper - was followed by President Phillips & Evans &c on very interesting subjects relative to their future prosperity.

Thursday 29th 52 - In Swansea, walked about with brother & sister Phillips &c also attended preaching meeting in Trades Hall - preached there myself - on the first principles & bore testimony to the truth of our doctrine afterwards went down to watch the steamer when she came in about 11 o'clock.

Friday 30th 1852 - In Swansea helped Elder Evans &c to carry his things down to the Packet but she could not go out owing to too little water to float her - I left Swansea with Sister Phillips & Martha Evans for Merthyr Tydfil - reached Merthyr about 10 o'clock.

Merthyr Saturday 31st 52 - Having brought the Stars with me from Swansea, packed them up & distributed them.

Sunday February 1st 52 - In Merthyr morning attended Merthyr saints meeting spoke a little to the saints, then took the presiding of the meeting being fast Sunday called all the Elders up to the stand & afterwards called them one by one to speak had very good meetings spoke little in Merthyr when Elder John Argust defended the principles of the saints.

Wednesday Feb 11th 52 - attended Georgetown Branch saints meeting spoke a little a word of council to the saints.

Thursday Feb 12th 52 - attended Merthyr saints meeting Pres. Pugh present &c closed the meeting through prayer.

Thursday Feb 19 52 - writing morning - distributing the stars in the afternoon attended Merthyr saints meeting President Phillips present also Robert Evans of Liverpool who taught the saints very interesting principles.

Sunday Feb 22'52 - Morning writing attended Merthyr Ynysgau Branch saints meeting spoke a little before Elder Davis on the 'word of wisdom' &c - attended Merthyr in the event when Elders David Llewellyn, Jones & Pres. Phillips preached to a large congregation.

Monday Feb 23/52 - Merthyr heard some things not right concerning Pres Pugh, William Jones, David Roberts, Dewi Elfed Jones, &c in the White Lion Merthyr

Tuesday Feb 24th 52 - Writing morning was down in the Dyffryn on the Pony - Troedyrhiw

Wednesday 25/52 - Writing some letters to the Valley to Thomas Jeremy, Capt. Dan Jones - went to hear John Jones Llangollen to lecturing on miracles when he throwed some sharp hurts to the saints. Pres Phillips & Davis present with myself

Thursday 26th 1852 - attended Merthyr saints meeting had good & interesting instructions from President Phillips & others

Friday 27th 1852 - Busy writing &c attended Cefn Branch council in the evening at the request of President Pugh councelled them to endeavour their best to pass the Aberdare cards.

Saturday 28th 1852 - writing all day , distributed some playcards concerning two lectures by President Phillips & Davis in reply to Jones' lecture of Llangollen amongst the shops.

Sunday 29th 1852 - attended Merthyr afternoon & evening writing & reading in morning gave 10 pence towards erecting a temple.

Monday March 1st/52 - visited Aberdare Eisteddfod Pres Phillips Pugh & many presiding Elders present had a very good meeting told a story in it concerning Pompey

Tuesday March 2nd-52 - writing all day attended in the evening meeting in Merthyr Branch room where Pres WJ Phillips delivered a lecture in reply to Jones of Llangollan's lecture last Wednesday evening against the principles of the saints - there were hundreds present, as full as it was to be on the conference day

Wednesday March 3rd 52 - Evening went with Elder Davis to take notes of Jones Llangollan's second lecture for him to deliver a lecture in reply

Thursday March 4th/52 - writing morning paid Pres Phillips 8/- which he lent me for to present Elder John Evans with a hat who was going out to preach in North Wales

Friday 5th 1852 - Stars No. 5 arrived packing them up & distributing them, writing &c.

Saturday 6th 1852 - writing &c Pres Levi Richards arrived here from Swansea slept with him Saturday evening.

Sunday 7th 52 - attended Merthyr meeting being fast Sunday held the meeting until 3 o'clock - about 5 o'clock President Fr D Richards arrived from Liverpool. Pres Fr D Richards & Levi Richards preached in the evening to a crowded congregation had a very good meeting.



Monday 8th 1852 - Took a walk with Pres Fr D Richards to the fields & writing & a meeting was held in the evening in Georgetown Branch room where Pres Fr D Richards & Levi Richards preached to the saints very important principles to a crowded congregation of saints - had a very interesting meeting.

Tuesday 9th 1852 - writing all day Pres Fr D Richards left & returned to Liverpool, went to hear Pres John Davis delivering a lecture in reply to Jones' of Llangollen's lecture, great many present some tried to disturb the meeting.

Wednesday 10th 52 - went to send Pres Levi Richards & to help him carry his carpet bag over the mountain to Aberdare

Thursday 11th 52 - Making an index for the Welsh Book of Mormon, in the evening went to hear Elder Davis finishing his discourse against the principles taught by Mr Jones of Llangollen.

Friday March 12/52 - President Phillips moved that Thomas Morgan be ordained an elder seconded by myself & was ordained under our hands

Saturday March 13th 52 - In Merthyr writing all day making index for the Welsh Book of Mormon.

Sunday 14th 1852 - attended Merthyr saints meeting talked a little to the saints on the importance of bearing our testimonies, in the saints meeting attended evening where Elder John Davis and other preached - contributed 9 pence to the church fund.

Monday 15th 1852 - Merthyr writing in morning, went down with little Moroni Lorenzo Phillips to Troedyrhiw to visit some of the saints, came up in the train, attended Merthyr branch council.

Tuesday March 16th 1852 - Merthyr writing letters &c attended general council meeting in the evening.

Wednesday March 17th - writing and answering letters giving receipts for Temple monies & Perpetual Emigration Fund - in the evening went in company of Pres Phillips, Elders Robert Evans & John Roberts to hear Jones Llangollen in Bethesda Chapel lecturing against the saints.

Thursday March 18th 52 - writing & reading &c - in the evening went to hear Elder Robert Evans delivering a lecture in reply to Jones' lecture. there was a very great congregation he came through it well, believe it will do a great good

Friday March 19 - answering & writing receipts for Per Emig Fund & the temple contribution

Saturday March 20 - writing &c receiving money to the Per Emig Fund & to the temple &c when Pembrokeshire conf brought about £11.0.0 more that what was distributed upon them, also south Permbroke brought about 2£ 9/-, more than was asked.

Sunday March 21/52 - writing all morning receiving money from the branches of this (E. Glamorgan Conf) towards the temple & to the Per Emig Fund attended Merthyr saints meeting when Pres Phillips spoke on very interesting subject in regard to the temple this branch has been very neglectful in regard to collections, some officers had not done their duty right they confessed & Pres Phillips prayed over the Branch & gave forgiveness to the officers & councelled them to endeavor to bring the remainder of the money towards the temple in, gave 8 pence to the different funds, attended evening services at Merthyr Branch

Monday 22 1852 - writing all day receipts & letter for temple & Per Emig Fund money

Tuesday March 23rd 52 - receiving temple money from Monmouth conf & writing receipts &c receiving PE Fund money Box full of Elder Taylor's portraits arrived worth about £50 from London (Moddy's)

Wednesday 24th 52 - writing & morning afternoon went out on ponny to Dowlais Pantsgallog & back through the country - Elder John Jones late Pres of the Gellifaelog Branch called upon President Phillips desired him to lay hands upon him, he being rather slow with the work, but promised to be better &c

Thursday 25th 1852 - attended Merthyr saints meeting spoke a little to the saints before Pres Philips, had pretty good meeting

Friday 26th 52 - writing in morning afternoon went to Tredegar for the Per E. Fund account of Branches, also went in company with Evening with President Giles, & Elder G. W. Davis to Blackwood (or Coeduon) attended council gave some counsels to the officers at the request of Bro Giles.

Saturday March 27 52 - in Blackwood started early for Merthyr through Tredegar reached home about 10 o'clock morning

Sunday 28th, 1852 - making up the accounts ready for posting tomorrow attended Merthyr saints meeting spoke a little to the saints while the Elders were breaking bread, preached in Georgetown Branch in the evening - very busy till a late hour receiving & giving receipts for temple contributings of the conference.

Monday 29th 1852 - balanced the accounts of temple and PE Fund donation delayed sending the money to L-pool till tomorrow they had 13/4 of the temple money short to make my account for this conference up gave them out of my own pocket & were obliged to borrow about £10 to make the full amount of the conference up, Elder D Jones borrowed them & brought them to me delivered the sum of £199.14.2 ½ to Pres W.J. Phillips

Tuesday 30th 1852 - the money having been rec'd from every conference (but not the full amt from every one some brought more others less, therefore Pres Phillips had to lend out of his own pockets 6/11 to make up the £400.0.0 I took the 400 £ & 32 £ 17.8- Per Emig Fund to Brecon old bank got a bank Post Bill for the sum of £432.17.8 in favor of Franklin D. Richards Liverpool, registered the letter & posted it. - attended general council meeting received £2.11.0 from Gellifaellog Branch temple money, balance of their sum

Wednesday 31st 1852 - gave Pres Pugh £2.10 to go & pay part of the £10 borrowed for to make up the sum of this conference - writing letter, making up a list for the distribution of cards for the concert that is to be held Monday after the conf with Pres Pugh - reckoned how much worth of books & Stars I had on hand ready for balancing Stars agency acct against the conf.

Thursday 8th 52 - with Brother Davis making the a/c attended Merthyr saints meeting spoke a little after Elders Harris & Reynolds had very good meeting.

Sunday 11th 52 - went in company with Pres Davis to Tredegar Conference on the ponny started about 8 o'clock morning reached there at 10 o'clock had very good morning meeting spoke in the afternoon meeting for a short time before Pres Davis who spoke on very interesting subjects, Pres Davis preached (after Elder John Jones preached a little) on "that which is perfect" started off about 9 o'clock got home about ½ past 10 o'clock (slept well)

Monday 12th/52 - with Pres Davies making up the a/c through the morning, attended Merthyr counsel meeting President Philips arrived from London

Tuesday 13th - General Council meting President Philips, Davis & Pugh were present, had a good meeting

Wednesday 14th - copying the records of the general council &c -- took the ponny to be shod

Thursday 15th - not quite well, paid the 12 shillings I borrowed from Pres Phillips.

Friday 16th - writing &c went according to Pres Phillips counsel to distribute pamphlets (LD Saints in Utah) High Street Merthyr

Saturday 17th - sent a pamphlet to Henry Rirkhouse R.T. Crawshay, Esqrs through the post

Sunday 18th - went about six o'clock morning in company with Wms & Miss Phillips to old Castle Morlais to see its ruins & for our health returned about ½ past 9. attended morning services in Merthyr branch, visited Ffynon Tydfil branch in afternoon spoke for some time to the saints blessed Thomas Vaughn had pretty good meeting - about ½ past 5 o'clock went to meet Prests Erastus Snow and F.D. Richards & Elder Linforth at the train brought them up to the house then went down to the meeting where all the town branches of Merthyr were assembled had good teaching from these three brethren

Monday 19th 52 - went for a walk to the fields before breakfast with Elders F.D. Richard & Erastus snow, went about with brother Erastus to show him some of the pits to see by what principle the coals are raised up &c went for a walk in the evening with Elders Davis & Linforth

Tuesday 20th 1852 - went for a walk with Elders Richards & Snow went over some field for the purpose to cross to some coal pit but were hindered by some men who through stones after me & brother Richards, Brother Snow stayed until he arrived to him

Wednesday 21st 1852 - writing &c attended Georgetown branch meeting spoke a little to the Saints in regard to the P.E. Fund

Thursday 22nd 1852 - went with Prests Phillips & Davis to send Elders F.D. Richards & Erastus Snow to the train who left for Newport, sent Brother Linforth with middle day train who left for L.pool attended evening meeting where Elder Robert Campbell preached very interesting subjects to the saints

Friday 23rd 1852 - slept with Elder Robert Campbell last night, Elders Jno Parry and John Davies arrived here from North Wales about 3 o'clock.

Saturday 24th 1852 - very busy preparing things ready for tomorrow (being Conf day) attended council in the evening

Sunday 25th 1852 - attended conference gave accounts of all money received to the several Funds &c 7 for Books &c had very good meetings - I was released from being a secretary to this conference/Eastern Glamorganshire - &c Elder William Jones was set in my stead, owing to the press of business I had to do with Pres Phillips concerning the principality

Monday 26th 1852 - [Crossed out: "attended General council at 10 o'clock & to deliver cards money, which sum was"] General council of the Principality at 10 o'clock, where eleven Presidents of conferences were present had very good meeting postbound about 4 o'clock afternoon until 2 o'clock tomorrow evening attended Eisteddfod in the Merthyr Room had very pleasant meetings sang twice with Brother John Parry Junr of North Wales

Tuesday 27th 1852 - at 10 o'clock morning attended Council in Merthyr Room delivered to Pres Pugh the sum of £46.0.0 being card money received up to this date as per list of Branches (had 3/6 short which must have been lost or mixed with other money which I was presented with) at 2 o'clock attended Council belonging to the principality which was adjourned from Monday afternoon for particulars see minutes



Wednesday 28th 1852 - rather busy in the house writing attended meeting in Georgetown Branch spoke a little before Brother Parry

Thursday 29th 1852 - gave 2/6 to Brother Parry who left with Pres Philips for Lpool attended Merthyr saints meeting had very good meeting - borrowed from sister Mary Thomas 20 shillings of which Pres Pugh sent me for to give Elder Wm Richards of Merionethshire Conference

Friday 30th 1852 - balanced my agency accounts gave the 20 shillings to Elder Wm Richards bought day book 2/6

Saturday 1st May - very busy writing and balancing a/c rec'd letter from Henry Evans, Eliezer & Samuel Evans from New Orleans &c

Sunday 2nd May/52 - attended Merthyr meeting being Fast Sunday, gave to funds 11 pence also evening meeting while Elders Davis Jones & President Davies preached

Monday 3rd 1852 - writing &c

Tuesday 4th/52 - writing &c - was down at sale of Morgan Evans &c attended a meeting in Ynysgau Branch Room when Elder Shirtliff preached to some of the saints of different branches had very good meeting

Wednesday 5th 1852 - slept with Elder Shirtliff last night went with him to the Taff Vale Station he was off to Newport went to Cefn Branch meeting according to Pres Pugh's counsel with a note to the President spoke for some time to the saints on different subjects

Thursday 6th 1852 - distributed the Stars &c - went in company with Mrs Phillps & Miss Phillips & little Moroni to Troedyrhiew to meet Pres Phillips where we were received kindly by Brother Thomas Owens & wife had some victuals met Brother P at the station & went up with him to Merthyr arrived there about 7 o'clock went straight to meeting had some good instructions from him & Elder Davis &c very good meeting felt myself, happy & fresh couraged as it were to be more determined than ever with the work of the Lord

Friday 7th 1852 - writing &c went down to a counsel belonging to Merthyr branch dismissed it through prayer

Sunday May 9th 1852 - attended Merthyr Branch morning meeting dismissed it through prayer also afternoon meeting where Pres Phillips & Pugh spoke on very interesting subjects also evening service where Presidents Phillips & Davies preached - had very good meetings all day

Monday May 10th - writing letters &c heard of a dreadful occurrence in Cwmbach pit where 69 men were killed & of that number were 19 saints, viz. Eliezer Morris President of the Branch & two sons, Elder Thomas Evans, Thomas Phillips & David Jenkins, Rees Hopkins & son & great many others

Tuesday May 11th 52 - Pres Phillips went through to Cwmbach & saw the dead bodies &c of the brethren attended general Council meeting

Wednesday May 12th 52 - went with Pres Phillips & Sister Phillips to meet the funerals where there were thousands of people come to meet them, there were hundreds of spectators viewing the funerals went with Lewis Jones his sons funeral to Cefn & came down to Georgetown saints meeting spoke a little to the saints & counselled them to faithfulness

Thursday 13th 1852 - Pres Phillips left for Pembrokeshire conference - attended Merthyr saints meeting spoke a little to the saints on the word of wisdom & the blessings derived through keeping it. ordained Walter Rees an Elder &c Elder David Rees was cut out of the church.

Friday 14th 1852 - writing &c receiving books for binding



Saturday 15th 52 - distributing the Stars &c sent 63 volumes to Wm Hewitt Carmarthen to bind in calf

Sunday 16th 52 - attended Merthyr saints meeting writing letters & posting the Books in the morning, preached a little in the evening in Merthyr branch after Elders Thomas of Dowlais & James Ellis & John Reynolds, upon the faulse reports against the saints & upon the return of the judges from Salt Lake City, bore testimony to this work

Monday 17th 52 - writing &c attended Merthyr council dismissed it through prayer

Tuesday 18th 52 - morning writing & after dinner went on the ponny's back with little Moroni round Pontsticill & through the Cefn back attended General Council called by Pres Pugh where all Elders present had to rise & bear their feelings &c

Wednesday 19th 52 - writing &c went with Pres Davis to hear the reformers lecturing against the Wesleyans conference

Thursday 20th 52 - morning writing &c attended Merthyr saints meeting had very good meeting, distributed the Stars

Friday 21st 52 - writing &c copying the general council

Sunday 23rd 1852 - attended Merthyr morning meeting and Ffynon Tydfil Saints meeting spoke a little after some elders and was followed by Elder David Jones I spoke upon the necessity of being obedient in this Church in order to go on favourably attended Merthyr branch evening service when Elder Dewi Elfed Jones preached to a large congregation

Sunday May 30th 52 - morning writing letters &c attended Merthyr saints meeting spoke a little to the saints & counselled them not to disrespect each other but to love one another & do good to each other always and for them to be willing to receive their instructions through the proper channel, & if they don't thoroughly understand those that hold high offices in this church when speaking for them to be patient & have them cooked as it were little more by those that are set over them to teach them the things of God &c - attended evening service where President Phillips preached very interesting principles which were quite new to my ears & which caused my heart to rejoice

Monday 31st 1852 - went down with Sister Miss H Phillips to Cardiff with the 1/4 to 6 o'clock train morning reached Cardiff between 7 & 8 - walked through the town down as far as the docks where we were little amused at the sailors dancing & playing - walked up to the town again to Sister Sarah Evans house where we were kindly received & got some food, also went to see Bro Ellis' family next door but one - then we walked through the fields to Llandaff where there was a fair, walked just back & forward through it & went to the old church paid 2 pence each for admission, got out & took the omnibus to Cardiff for 6 each, went to dine afterwards walked down to the sea side where we had a beautiful view at the vessels coming in sat there for about an hour and a half - then went up slowly to the Cardiff station & waited for the Merthyr train started about ½ past 8 evening, got home about 11 o'clock.

Thursday 24th 1852 - writing &c receipts &c attended Merthyr saints meeting where all the Branch Elders were called on the stage to bare their testimony had very good meeting & instruction from Pres Phillips &c dismissed the meeting through prayer

Friday 25th 1852 - writing & distributing Stars &c - attended the singing school was called by the Pres (Powell), to give a word of counselled which I did &c exhorting them all to be certain when they come to such meetings to come for the purpose of doing good & not for fashion & not for coming after one another

Saturday 26th 52 - writing &c sent £200 to Liverpool for S.W. Richards Pres Phillips left for Brecon Conference.

Sunday morning about 2 o'clock started with Merthyr Choir for Brecon conference walked about 20 miles reached there about ½ past 8 - had a very good conf. we sung as we were going to the meetings & as we were coming from the meeting Sunday evening hundreds followed us & were delighted with the singing & wanted us to sing more

Monday 28th 1852 - I went in company with Brother Powell & fetch the sisters viz. Miss Phillips, Llewellyn & Sarah Roberts - to go up to the Baracks to see the Home Guards leaving town - went all through the Barracks - started home about 1 o'clock stayed in the Tavern Mynydd for about ½ an hour reached home about 10 o'clock very wet

Tuesday 29th 1852 - Busy writing &c attended a lecture on Electro Biology by M. Whitehorse who experimented upon many & made wonderful miracles such changing the taste of water without any trick commanding persons to fall asleep open their mouths & fail to close them again until he would say alright &c

Wednesday 30th 52 - writing &c balanced my a/c found that I was clear with the Liverpool office

Monday 5th 1852 - writing morning &c having been informed by some of the bretheren who had been in Monmouth conf that there was a soiree to be held this evening in Nantyglo I went in company with Mrs. Phillips & Davis in Walter Garms' spring cart arrived there about 6 o'clock found Pres Phillips in Brother Dudley's house & Elder Shurtliff in the room - had a great concert &c

Tuesday 6th 1852 - slept last night in a house of one of the world [non Mormon] started for home about 12 o'clock through to Tredegar where they stayed for dinner, I walked home reached Merthyr about 6 o'clock attended General council meeting had some good instructions from Presidents Phillips and Pugh

Monday 12th 1852 - writing &c attended a soiree which was held in the Merthyr Branch room had a very nice concert

Tuesday 13th 52 - writing &c went as far as Cefn Coed Cymmer with Pres Phillips & Dewi E. Jones when we met with Pres Pugh & some more Elders who came back with us to bath had a very nice bath, came home in Gig

Wednesday 14th - writing afternoon went as far as Rhewl y Felin Aberdare to send Pres Phillip return with Elder John Morris and James in the Gig

Thursday 15th 52 - writing &c posting my agency books, was plagued with the tooth ache went on the bed about 6 o'clock and slept until after 8 evening & was too late to attend Merthyr saints meeting

Friday 16th 1852 - got two of my teeth extracted one very large one by Dr Davis Cyfarthfa [an area of Merthyr Tydfil] was rather afraid to extract it, got them drawn well for 2/6 - Elder John Morris held my head

Thursday 22nd 52 - writing &c went with Elder Thomas Jones of Cefn to meet Mr. Herbert Williams funderal who died in Ffynonau, went with him about five miles to Brecon both on horseback, attended Merthyr saints meeting spoke a little to the saints on the necessity of been doing our duty before leaving Babilon this is preach & testify to them of what the Lord has done & will do in the last days &c especially those who intended leaving next spring. & after doing that they will feel rightly on their journey ordained one Wm Edwards & confirmed one girl

Friday July 30th - when I started from Merthyr in company with Miss Phillips to Carmarthen reached Swansea about 3 o'clock went down to Mrs Morgans Garden St I went to bath in the sea before I done everything paid 6' for a machine lodged in Mrs. Morgan's

July 31st 52 - started early with Proberts omnibus for Carmarthen arrived there about 1 o'clock got dinner in Mrs. Davis cookshop went to Bro Thomas Evans' house found them all well slept a little on the bed afterward went for a walk through the town

August 1st 52 - went to Mrs. Davis' & got breakfast with Elder Pugh & Dewi Elfed & attended preaching meeting on the bathouse with Dewi Elfed went to the Room where this conference was held after the Conf business had been done we were favoured with some nice teachings from Presidents Davis & Pugh - evening attended preaching meeting on the Bathouse where several Elders preached to a large & attentive congregation afterwards went for a walk & got some good milk in a farm house

Monday Aug 2nd - went to breakfast to Brother David Jones' saw brother Davis going off on the mail for home got £2.17.4 from Brother J Jones for books from Carmarthen Conf - went down the river Towy in a boat to Llanstephan in the evening together with Miss Phillips David Jones & Martha reached there about 11 o'clock had great difficulty to get lodgings we both lodged at the Cambrian & the girls slept at another house



Tuesday 3rd Aug - got up about 7 o'clock it was raining very hard & as soon as it got over we both went down to the shore & bathed it was very windy & rough but the water was fine returned to eat a splendid breakfast at where Miss Phillips & Evans lodged got some ham & rice pudding afterwards we went & bathed again when about 24 men came and bathed too returned home & got dinner then we went all together & saw the old Llanstephan castle had a beautiful view to the sea &c walked about the shore saw the old women gathering cockles & after we got some thing to eat returned to the boat started about 6 o'clock having a nice breeze I steered all the way to Carmarthen reached there about 7 o'clock took a walk after supper with Pres D Jones

Wednesday 4th 52 - slept well last night after having been in the cold water got some breakfast at David Jones - attended saints meeting spoke a little after John Evans of Cardigan

Thursday 5th 52 - rather rainy in the morning about 11 o'clock started with Mrs. David Jones, Martha & Hannah to Courtrualle to see for sister Williams had good time there plenty of sweetmilk &c met Pres Pugh John Price & Dewi Elfed on the way as we were going there returned about 9 evening received letter from my bro Elias from Salt Creek near Council Bluffs

Friday 6th 52 - stayed in Carmarthen all day got some sewins for dinner at Isaac Jones' when Pres Pugh & Dewi Elfed dined with us - we walked as far as Ffynon ddrain & got some apples there

Saturday 7th 52 - started at 9 o'clock on the mail for Swansea reached there about 1 o'clock got a train in a few minutes reached Merthyr about 4 o'clock had it very wet all the way called at Ephraim Rowland's house while they were changing horses in Llanelly

Thursday 26th August - distributed Stars in the morning & went in company of Mrs. [Misses] H Phillips & Davis to Cwmbach to see Sister Cook who was very sick just expected to expire every moment - visited the Saints meeting spoke a little on different things had a very good meeting had supper at Sister Vaughn & slept at Bro. Edwards ordained 3 or 4 brethren Rosser, Vaughn & Harries

Friday 27th 1852 - visited several of the brethren who were very kind to us Sister Cook very bad left her in that condition got home over the mountain about 9 o'clock I was struck very bad with pain in my eyes & head afterward upon my stomach, had great difficulty to reach home

Jones had a first rate meeting gave 20 shillings which I had promised towards Conf debt for books

Monday 6th Sep - writing & sending circulars received from Liverpool to all the conferences, went with Pres Phillips, Shurtliff and Elder Jones of Cefn to Brother Rice Williams of Cefn Pennar who was rather deadly as it were in the Church, he came much better after Elder Phillips & Shurtliff spoke to him a little invited them to call again in a month

Wednesday Sep 15th - writing some letters to different places attended to the distribution of the Stars & visited Georgetown Branch where I spoke a little after Elder John Morris traveling Elder upon the Per Emig Fund showing how long they should wait in Babilon according to what they contribute at present & was followed by President Phillips on different principles mostly upon the subject of Emigration &c had a firstrate meeting

Thursday Sep 16th/52 - writing & went in company with Elder Davis & wife to view the underground brother Thomas Jones Gellideg & sons came in with us preached we three in a dram, &c - attended Merthyr Saints meeting had good instruction from President John Davis &c I spoke a little afterwards & desired an interest in the prayers of the saints that I might have health & strength to live & go to Zion, spoke a little upon the subject of Emig Fund &c had a firstrate meeting

Friday Sep 17th/52 - writing & making up the book binding accounts President Phillips & wife & two of the children left for Llandyfry [Llandovery] Carmarthenshire very fine day for them in the gig

Wednesday 29th 1852 - Balancing Per Emig Fund books when Pres Phillips forwarded to Liverpool from Wales to the above Fund £361 Brother Phillips was called into the court house I accompanied him there where we had to stay for about two hours - they wanted him to keep his aged mother I was called to speak & told them his circumstances & they all showed a very bad spirit towards us the case was adjourned until this day week

Tuesday Oct 12th 1852 - In Elder Giles' house most of the morning when the Harp was played beautifully by Elder Parry started home with Miss Phillips after dinner got a ride in an old cart on the mountains had a narrow escape owing to the chain over the horse's back broke & the shafts fell down &c attended general council in Merthyr

Monday 1st Nov '52 - attended court house when Pres Philips trial was tried had a firstrate trial, Mr. Owens defended Bro Phillips, I was called as a witness, also Brother Davis Thomas Jones, Thomas Llewellyn & Clifford - everything was going on firstrate in favour of Bro Phillips & his mother, but after all, Brother Phillips had to support his mother or at least give 3 shillings a week (if he could) towards her maintenance
