Proof Summary
According to his mother's obituary, John Bennett (1860-1863) died and was buried at sea. John's name was listed with the rest of his family members in the passenger list of the Cynosure, which sailed from Liverpool to New York when John was three years old. A letter from David M. Stuart, a fellow passenger on the Cynosure, mentions that twelve young children passed away from measles and one boy fell overboard from playing among the chains of the ship.
One month after arriving in New York, John's family joined the Samuel D. White Pioneer Company and traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah. John is the only family member whose name was not included in the company list. Additionally, he did not appear in subsequent U.S. censuses. John's absence from U.S. records that listed the rest of his family, combined with the information in his mother's obituary, indicates that John died at sea.
Although the cause of John’s death is unknown, it is likely that he was one of the twelve children who died of measles, or he might have been the boy who fell overboard.
