Caroline was on board the "Golconda" with her mother's sister Priscilla Merriman Phillips Lewis and her six-year-old cousin Louisa Mary Phillips, Priscilla's daughter by her first husband Charles Phillips. Three years before the crossing Priscilla had married John A. Lewis, a widower with four children. Caroline's mother Elizabeth Merriman died in 1850. Her father died in 1887 in Brigham City, Box Elder County, Utah. After twelve years of marriage to William Franklin Pace she gained a sister-wife, her cousin Louisa Mary Phillips.
